In situ degradation of dairy cattle feedstuffs using reusable local nylon fabric bags

Abstract: Background and Aim: Disposable imported nylon bags used in an in situ digestibility measurement restrict the effort of scientists to obtain more accurate information about ruminant feed quality due to their low affordability and environmentally unfriendly characteristics. This study aimed to find reusable local nylon fabrics to substitute imports. Materials and Methods: Five local fabrics (B1 = Abutai, B2 = Taffeta, B3 = Organza, B4 = N57, and B5 = M100) were used to make nylon bags and compared with the impor… Show more

“…The cattle were fed twice daily in the morning and afternoon with composition diets of 60% Napier grass and 40% concentrate mix on a dry matter basis. The ration contained 61% TDN, 11.6% CP, 0.39% Ca, and 0.33% P. The nylon bags used in this study were self-produced using Abutai material (Despal et al, 2022b), comparable to ANKOM nylon bags. A 5 g of foliage samples were put in the nylon bag, incubating in the rumen for 6, 9, 12, 24, 48, and 72 h. Three bags per sample were incubated to generate sufficient residue for subsequent analysis.…”

“…The most frequently used RDP in situ method required serial observation and protein analysis to build a model to predict RDP according to the passage rate (Ørskov & Mcdonald, 1979). Although the disposal of imported bags used in the in situ method can be replaced using reusable local fabric (Despal et al, 2022b), serial observation is required to build the RDP prediction model. The observations required a lot of sample and protein analysis.…”

“…The moisture content of rice bran from West Java was significantly higher than that from West Sumatra. According to [24], moisture below 14% is safe for dairy cattle trading concentrate. Therefore, rice bran from both provinces of origin was still in the moisture content range save from trading.…”

“…The feed was given twice daily at 7:00 am and 2:00 pm. The ratio used in this study was a mix of elephant grass and concentrate with a ratio of 60:40 DM, similar to the feeding pattern described by Despal et al (2022). The experimental design used a 35 factorial randomized block design and three replications.…”
