In recent years, the oil pollution problem on the Loess Plateau in western China is becoming increasingly serious, therefore, the use of hydroxyl radical (·OH) advanced oxidation process has increased due to its ability to efficiently degrade total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) in soil. However, the ability to produce ·OH of different oxidants varies widely, and the removal effect of specific pollutants has fluctuations and differences. The objective of this study is to screen the best oxidant according to the physico‐chemical properties and pollution situation of polluted soil, and to reveal the degradation mechanism of pollutants. In this study, we employed sodium ferrate (Na2FeO4) to produce ·OH for the degradation of TPHs in aged oil‐polluted soil located in the western part of the Loess Plateau in China. The results showed that the removal rates of TPH in the soil samples by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), sodium persulfate (Na2SO4) and Na2FeO4 could reach 45.5%, 62.4%, and 65.6% respectively. The ·OH produced during the process played a major role in TPH oxidation with a contribution of more than 80%; H2O2 was intermediate substance that generated ·OH, biochar could induce the production of ·OH, the addition of biochar could activate H2O2 to promote the generation of ·OH and the removal rate is significantly increased by 19.2%. In situ remediation of polluted soil on the Loess Plateau using Na2FeO4, with a TPH degradation rate of 87.5%. The results of this study will provide a new method for the efficient degradation of TPH in loessial soil.

Due to human activity and, to a lesser extent, natural processes, petroleum hydrocarbons continue to pollute the environment. These contaminants of concern can be found globally and their remediation is key to restoring affected sites to safe and functional status. Conventional treatment of sites contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons relies heavily on remediation approaches that are often financially prohibitive or may be technically impractical and that sometimes produce undesirable by-products. Using microbes that occur in nature (if not always at the site), can be a viable treatment with distinct advantages. Understanding the environment, contaminants, and natural biological processes occurring are key aspects for effective application of remediation techniques that rely on biological processes. Whether by stimulating the native microbial community, or, secondarily, by augmenting the native community with known degrader populations to degrade the target compounds, bioremediation is a practical, effective, and sustainable natural solution to a wide array of contamination around the globe. This chapter explores approaches to bioremediation of both soil and groundwater contaminated by petroleum hydrocarbons, describing how the approaches work and the benefits and challenges associated with them. It focuses on the use of aerobic and anaerobic microbial bioremediation, phytoremediation, and mycoremediation to address petroleum hydrocarbons.

Tetrachloroethylene (PCE) is among the most ubiquitous chlorinated compounds found in groundwater contamination. Its chlorinated degradation by-products remain highly toxic. In this study, an anaerobic/aerobic permeable reactive barrier system consisting of four different functional layers was designed to remediate PCE-contaminated groundwater. The first (oxygen capture) layer maintained the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration at < 1.35 mg/L in influent supplied to the second (anaerobic) layer. The third (oxygen-releasing) layer maintained DO concentration at > 11.3 mg/L within influent supplied to the fourth (aerobic) layer. The results show that 99% of PCE was removed, mostly within the second layer (anaerobic). Furthermore, the toxic by-products trichloroethylene (TCE), dichloroethylene (DCE), and vinyl chloride (VC) were further degraded by 98, 90, and 92%, respectively, in layer 4 (aerobic). Thus, the designed anaerobic/aerobic permeable reactive barrier system could control both PCE and its degradation by-products, showing great potential as an efficient remediation alternative for the in situ treatment of PCE-contaminated groundwater.
