In situ assessment of the saliva effect on enamel morphology after microabrasion technique

Abstract: Aim: This study evaluated saliva effects on enamel morphology surface after microabrasion technique. Methods: Enamel blocks (16 mm 2) obtained from bovine incisors were divided into 9 groups as follows: one control group (no treatment), four groups with microabrasion treatment using 35% phosphoric acid and pumice (H 3 PO 4 +Pum) and other four groups treated with 6.6% hydrochloric acid and silica (HCl+Sil). One group of each treatment was submitted to 4 frames of saliva exposure: without exposure, 1-h exposure… Show more

“…For the H 3 PO 4 + pumice treatment, a decrease of mineral loss was observed only after 24 h of saliva exposure; the mineral composition never matched that of the control group, not even after the 7‐day in situ regimen. These results are in agreement Pini et al . in relation to the roughness analysis.…”

“…Moreover, the mechanical application recommended for the microabrasion technique can emphasize these effects . Enamel microhardness and roughness can be influenced by a combination of the abovementioned factors, as described in previous studies . However, most of these studies have not considered the protective capacity of the oral environment, due to the presence of saliva and its components.…”

“…Recently, scientific studies have been performed to improve microabrasion and to know its effects on enamel. [ 8 9 10 11 12 ] Initially, the acid used for microabrasion was 18% HCl; today, it is recognized that this concentration is considered erosive and toxic. Currently, the same acid is employed at a lower concentration and containing silica in commercial formulations.…”
