“…Various sali-578 vary proteins have been found to maintain oral health by protect-579 ing against tooth wear, controlling microbial adherence, inducing 580 ion transport, and enhance remineralization [54]. In addition, sal-581 iva plays an important role in re-establishing the characteristics 582 of the enamel and reduction of its roughness after microabrasion 583 [55]. However, many previous studies have used artificial saliva 584 or remineralizing solution after bleaching to simulate clinical 585 situation and have also found significant reduction of the mechani-586 cal properties [56][57][58][59].…”

“…Enamel is a hierarchical 51 biocomposite made of 94-96 wt.% inorganic content, 1 wt.% 52 organic matrix and 4-5% water [1]. The inorganic content is com- 53 prised of long thin hydroxyapatite crystals tightly packed together 54 with a protein glue (hydrophobic enamelin) to form enamel rods 55 [1]. These rods are encapsulated by a thin protein-rich organic 56 sheath (primarily hydrophilic ameloblastin) around 0.8-1 lm 57 thick [2].…”

“…To obtain effective impregnation of the infiltrant resins within the enamel surface, enamel etching should be performed using 15% hydrochloric acid for 2 min (9). Without the conditioning step, it is difficult to occur the resin infiltration; otherwise, increased application times may promote an eroded surface with impurities over the porosities (5,10). Also, the application method of the infiltrant system may directly influence the penetration quality.…”

“…The confocal laser microscopy (CSLM), a microscopic observation technique that presents excellent results in different scientific fields like medicine, biology, materials, geology, and more, is a useful tool to provide information about the penetration depth of infiltrant resin in demineralized enamel (2,5,10,12,13). Its success is due to the advantages it has over the traditional optical technology (like image sharpness and contrast, better resolution, and others) (12,13).…”
