Abstract. The in-plane (plane stress) fracture toughness of two polyester (PET, PETG) sheets were assessed using the essential work of fracture (EWF) method after thermal and hygrothermal aging performed just below glass temperature. This ensured that physical aging takes place. On the aged sheets the yield stress (σy), enthalpy relaxation (ΔH) and EWF parameters were determined. It was observed that the essential work of fracture component related to the specific yielding (we,y) is suitable for assessing physical aging -independently of the humidity content. A good linear correlations exists between we,y, σy and ΔH.

Biodegradable polymers, blends, and composites are often investigated during tissue engineering studies, but their fracture properties, which are important mechanical engineering characteristics, are often disregarded or wrongly treated. In this study, essential work of fracture tests were performed on calcium carbonate filled poly(e-caprolactone), a very ductile polymer, to determine the effects of different filler shapes (calcite spheres and aragonite whiskers), sizes, and contents on the fracture parameters. Increasing the filler content caused stability problems during crack propagation, and this influenced the self-similarity of the load-displacement response and resulted in the yielding point being missed. Moreover, the yielding-related essential work of fracture and the energy dissipating during yielding were found to be almost independent of the filler content and thus could be indicators of matrix-filler adhesion. A shape effect of aragonite whiskers appeared during stable crack propagation; the motion of the particles and the friction on their surface slightly increased the dissipated energy quantum and resulted in a more oriented molecular structure.

In this study, poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/starch composites were prepared by a simple solvent casting method. The morphologies of the PMMA/starch composites were studied by scanning electron microscopy. The intermolecular interaction between PMMA and starch was investigated with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The thermal properties of the PMMA/ starch composites were compared with those of the pure PMMA sample. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the thermal stability increased as the starch content increased in the composites. The biodegradability of the PMMA/starch composites was studied with a soil burial test. The degradability was measured in terms of mechanical strength, which increased as the starch content increased. The essential work of fracture (EWF) of the PMMA/starch composite films was investigated by the application of EWF theory under in-plane (mode I) conditions, and we found that the toughness, in terms of the EWF of composites, increased compared to that of pure PMMA. The fracture of the composites was also evaluated by ANSYS software, and the results were compared to the experimental output. The increased toughness of these PMMA/starch composites may enable their application in the automobile and packaging industries.
