In my end is my beginning: developmental trajectories of adverse childhood experiences to late-life suicide

Abstract: ACEs have persistent and multifaceted effects on suicidality in late life. This association is due to multi-varied pathways. It is believed that the explanatory framework developed herein--in which biological, psychological and behavioral factors are organized, and the role of late-life stressors is highlighted--will spark further scientific inquiry into this important area.

“…It is important to highlight that color represents an important variable in health information systems for the epidemiological study of different groups, within different contexts and aggravations, thus being configured as an essential element for consideration as to risk of premature mortality (Sachs-Ericsson et al, 2017). In the present study, when deaths by suicide in this stratum was analyzed, black men and women were the most affected ones by this type of death.…”

“…It is necessary to pay special attention to the situation of elderly men, since they compose the group that is most vulnerable to the phenomenon (Minayo et al, 2012). There is an imperative need for investigations and action plans aimed at preventing suicidal behavior in older men (WHO, 2014;Lutz & Fiske, 2018;Sachs-Ericsson, Rushing, Stanley, & Shefley, 2017). Among several risk factors associated with suicidal behavior in this population, major ones include mental disorders, physical diseases, multiple losses, hopelessness, emotional suffering, functional impairment and reduced autonomy (Minayo & Cavalcante, 2015;Lapierre et al, 2011).…”

“…Third, self‐report symptom measures assessed various time frames of interest (e.g., past week versus past two weeks), which may challenge interpretability of findings. Fourth, it is recommended that other mechanisms that may account for the relationship between abuse and suicide (e.g., biological factors associated with these constructs; see Sachs‐Ericsson et al., , for review) be included in future studies. Fifth, several factors may have led to a biased sample (e.g., convenience sample; barriers to participation for those without internet access; exclusion of firefighters who quit/were fired and may have had more serious psychopathology), which could have led to issues with generalizability and interpretability.…”

“…Auch wenn es sich bei den verschiedenen Formen der Kindesmisshandlung und -vernachlässigung nicht um eigene Krankheitsentitäten im eigentlichen Sinne handelt, ist dennoch neben den unmittelbaren körperlichen Verletzungsfolgen und den Folgen der Mangelversorgung mit einer Reihe von langfristigen psychischen Störungen zu rechnen, die sich nachhaltig negativ auf individuelle Lebensläufe auswirken. Diese beinhalten u. a. Angststörungen, Depressionen, Borderline-Persönlichkeitsstörung, eine erhöhte Suizidrate, aber auch externalisierende Verhaltensauffälligkeiten und Substanzmissbrauch [2][3][4][5]. Dieser individuelle Leidensweg ist zudem mit hohen gesellschaftlichen Folgekosten verbunden [3].…”
