India has had an extremely adverse balance of trade in education. Though only a minor education exporter through Mode 2, India is the world's second largest studentsending country. Nevertheless, given English as the medium of instruction especially in apex institutions, low tuition and cost of living, quite a few world-class institutions, and a long tradition of hosting international students, India should have been an attractive destination. The paper, therefore, aims at investigating into the reasons for this failure by undertaking a two-phase empirical analysis. The findings of the first phase using the panel data and pooled ordinary least squares (OLS) techniques attribute this failure to India's lower per capita income, gross enrollment ratio (GER), and per-pupil expenditure, and none of its institutions being among the top 200 world university rankings. The findings of the second phase using the logit and probit models suggest that the probability of attracting international students by those institutions significantly increases which provide a hostel facility and fellowships, have a dedicated agency, and are accredited, privately-owned and unitary type.

A spatial perspective for predicting enrollment in a regional pharmacy school

Having the ability to predict enrollment is an important task for any school's recruiting team. The purpose of this study was to identify significant factors that can be used to predict the spatial distribution of enrollments. As a case study, we used East Tennessee State University (ETSU) pharmacy school, a regional pharmacy school located in the Appalachian Mountains. Through the application of a negative binomial regression model, we found that the most important indicators of enrollment volume for the ETSU pharmacy school were Euclidean distance, probability (based on competing pharmacy schools' prestige, driving distance between schools and home and tuition costs), and the natural barrier of the Appalachian Mountains. Using these factors, together with other control variables, we successfully predicted the spatial distribution of enrollments for ETSU pharmacy school. Interestingly, gender also surfaced as a variable for predicting the pharmacy school's enrollment. We found female students are more sensitive to the geographic proximity of home to school.

• Özİnsanlık tarihi kadar eski bir geçmişe sahip göç olgusu küreselleşme süreci ile birlikte yeni formlar kazanmış, hızı ve çeşitliliği artmıştır. Göç hareketleri daha çok işçi göçü olgusu ile birlikte ele alınmakla birlikte son yıllarda az gelişmiş ve gelişmekte olan ülkelerden gelişmiş ülkelere yönelik önemli bir artış gösteren öğrenci göçü olgusu da bireysel ve toplumsal değişimlere yol açan önemli bir sosyal hareketlilik konumundadır. Sosyoloji literatürüne yakın zamanda giren öğrenci göçü olgusu ile ilgili çok sayıda araştırmanın olmaması bu çalışmanın önemini destekler niteliktedir. Bu makale, Erasmus nesli denilen Erasmus değişim programı çerçevesinde Türkiye'den çoğunluğu Hıristiyan olan Avrupa ülkelerine giden üniversite öğrencilerinin yaşadığı sosyo-kültürel ve dini değişimleri tespit ederek sosyolojik olarak analiz etmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Daha önce yurt dışı tecrübesi yaşamamış öğrencilerin yeni bir din, kültür ve sosyal yapı ile kurdukları ilişki ve bu ilişki içinde nasıl etkilendiklerini ortaya koymak bu araştırmanın temel amacıdır. Araştırmanın temel veri kaynağı, 2012-2015 yılları arasında Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey Üniversitesi'nde farklı fakülte ve yüksekokullarda eğitim gören 55 öğrenci ile gitmeden önce ve döndükten sonra yapılan yüz yüze derinlemesine görüşmelerdir. Görüşmelerde açık uçlu on beş sorudan oluşan bir görüme formu uygulanmıştır. AbstractThe fact of migration, which has an old past inasmuch as history of humanity, has gained new forms, its' speed and variety have increased. Migration movements have generally been handled with the fact of labor migration, however; the fact of increasing student migrations from underdeveloped and developing countries to developed countries recently, is in a situation affecting individual and social changes. Being not much research about the fact of student migration entering into sociological literature recently, supports the importance of this study. This study aims to determine and analyze sociologically socio-cultural and religious changes of students called as Erasmus generation who go from Turkey to European countries most of whom are Christian in the framework of Erasmus exchange program. Putting forward the relationship of students, who have never gone abroad before, with a new religion, culture and social structure and how they are affected in this relationship is the main purpose of this study. The basic data source of the study is the interviews done with students receiving education in Karamanoglu Mehmetbey University in different faculties and colleges between 2012-2015 years before they went and after they came back.
