In-line phase-contrast and grating-based phase-contrast synchrotron imaging study of brain micrometastasis of breast cancer

Abstract: Current bio-medical imaging researches aim to detect brain micrometastasis in early stage for its increasing incidence and high mortality rates. Synchrotron phase-contrast imaging techniques, such as in-line phase-contrast (IPC) and grating-based phase-contrast (GPC) imaging, could provide a high spatial and density imaging study of biological specimens' 3D structures. In this study, we demonstrated the detection efficiencies of these two imaging tools on breast cancer micrometastasis in an ex vivo mouse brain… Show more

“…In particular, thanks to the high transverse coherence length of the synchrotron X-ray beam, it is possible to apply phase-contrast imaging (PCI) techniques with a simple experimental set-up. PCI has shown to be a powerful tool for the investigation of biological samples (Wilkins et al 1996;Fitzgerald, 2000;Mayo et al 2012;Mohammadi et al 2014;Huang et al 2015). Hence, synchrotron imaging may result in an improved detectability and in sharper borders around the thin membranes.…”

“…This makes PCI a very promising technique not only for weakly absorbing biological samples such as the membranous labyrinth, but also for (e.g.) lung tissues and (micro) metastatic tumours (Wilkins et al 1996;Fitzgerald, 2000;Mayo et al 2012;Mohammadi et al 2014;Huang et al 2015).…”

“…X-ray phase contrast tomography (PCT) has attracted a significant interest because it utilizes phase shift signals and could provide better contrast for soft biological tissues and low atomic number samples 13 . The grating interferometer for differential phase contrast (DPC) imaging is among the most promising methods that can stably extract phase signals 2, 46 .…”
