In‐line analysis of a fluid bed pellet coating process using a combination of near infrared and Raman spectroscopy

Abstract: Near infrared (NIR) and Raman spectroscopic analyzers applied through an immersion Lighthouse Probe (LHP) were used for simultaneous in-line monitoring of a fluid bed pellet coating process. Multivariate curve resolution analysis of data, collected from four pilot-scale batches, has shown that the two techniques deliver complementary information about the process and their combination may be synergistic. This data analysis enabled a much better understanding of some of the process observations and also gave so… Show more

“…Spectroscopic techniques have been applied to monitor the moisture content of the bed in real time [46,[63][64][65]. According to Chaplin et al [16], these techniques can be expensive to implement and lead to errors of measurements due to surface moisture, also requiring calibration for each product that is processed.…”

“…Bogomolov et al [64] applied NIR spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy for the in-line monitoring of the pellets coating process in a fluidized bed pilot plant in order to assess the performance of Raman spectroscopy and the combination of the NIR and Raman techniques simultaneously. Good results were observed, demonstrating that although NIR and Raman present relevant information, a deeper view into the process can be provided by the set of techniques.…”

“…A univariate model was used, which followed the decrease and increase of specific bands of a core compound and the coating, respectively [172]. NIR and Raman spectroscopy were used simultaneously during the fluid bed pellet coating process by Dogomolov and co-workers [173].…”
