The purpose of this paper is to explore how sustainable facilities management (SFM) and sustainable buildings (SB) can be designed and managed, bridging these gaps with a more integrated process. The need to bridge the traditional gap between design, construction and FM demands more effective solutions based on life cycle assessments. This also requires a coordinated approach with emerging environmental and sustainable initiatives in new and refurbished buildings. The solutions to these issues and aspects of the 'Green Shift' need to be co-ordinated at the strategic and tactical levels of an organisation with an aim of further implementation at the operational level. This paper takes the form of an exploratory approach based on six different case studies. The data has been sourced from cases studies involving interviews and documentation from large public institutions on how they manage and operate their existing buildings and how FM strategies are coordinated at all levels. A particular focus has been placed on buildings for higher education and research institutions. We have used a theoretical multidimensional framework for a analysing the gaps based on models for sustainable development, life cycle assessments of buildings and recognised models for efficient FM . The case studies have been supported by literature research as well as documentation from a number of applied projects. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that in the context of the Norwegian cases, there is currently little consistency in the degree to which the bridging of the gap between Sustainable FM and Sustainable Buildings is achieved or attempted.

There is much evidence that green building which is initially believed to be the solution to solve the problems of climate change and energy crisis can not perform as expected. The fact that green buildings consumed more energy and emit more CO 2 than expected during the actual operation is due to the problems of inefficiency in building operation and maintenance. Facilities management integrates the entire component of the built environment including people, process, place and technology to make sure that the built environment system works optimally. It offer important contributions to address the challenge of inefficiency in terms of building operation and maintenance thus make facilities management industry become one of the fastest growing industry in the world. By doing a literature review, this paper intends to understand more about the practices of facilities management in different part of the world. It is found that there is a stark contrast in the development of facilities management practices in the western countries as compared to that in the eastern countries. The industry of facilities management is relatively new and the research related to that field is still limited thus provide a huge opportunity to develop it in the future since the importance of this field is increasingly recognize.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to propose a framework model for workplace relocation. Design/methodology/approach Published literature was reviewed to comprehend the broad aspects of workplace relocation. The current practices of workplace relocation were investigated by corporate real estate (CRE) professionals. A generic framework model was developed to guide organizations upon the process of workplace relocation, over its lifecycle. The framework is validated by semi-structured interviews, conducted to ascertain its importance and applicability. Findings A validated integration definition for function modeling framework for the process of workplace relocation was developed. It consisted of three systematic processes, aligned with its lifecycle, namely, initiate the pre-relocation activities; implement the relocation activities; and conduct the post-relocation activities. Originality/value The workplace is a linkage between people, business processes and information technology, that provides a physical medium for interactions and provision of services. Workplace relocation is an opportunity to introduce elements of change. Yet the process of workplace relocation has been under-valued by practitioners in the CRE industry. The developed framework can be adopted as a standardized process for the relocation of workplace facilities. In terms of clearly structuring the workplace relocation processes, the study contributes to making these processes more transparent and aids accountability for decision-making. It is a time-saver and guiding model for organizations endeavoring on relocation.
