In-home data acquisition and control system based on BLE

Abstract: Wireless sensor networks (WSN) have plenty potential in many monitoring applications like environmental parameters or building and home automation scenarios including, gas, temperature, humidity, presence motion detection or even power grid analyzer. Recent advances in technology, IC manufacturing, and networking utilizing Bluetooth communications have managed to reduce the total power requirements of Bluetooth nodes to the newest Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) specification. Such nodes can perform measurement and… Show more

“…Bluetooth low energy (BLE) among Bluetooth versions is one of the most widely used WNTs for local communication. To achieve low energy consumption, it operates in sleep mode most of time, but can transmit data up to 150 m in open fields by increasing the power consumption [27]. The assessment of the feasibility of BLE in VANETS was performed in [28].…”

“…It's just for indoor use only and find interference from sunrays [3]. In [8] BLE based complete system is implemented for data gathering and control system for home. System supports maximum 64 sensors and 8 different devices, also can measure signal with sample rate up to 8000S/s with less than 0.7% error and transfer up to 9000bits/s with less than 5% error.…”

“…In such IoT applications, low‐cost sensors are prone to fail due to battery exhaustion, environmental degradation, malfunction of external hazard, mechanical/electrical problem, or malfunction of different hardware components in the sensor nodes 6–9 . These faulty sensor nodes lead to increase data transmission latency and reduce the performance of the network 10–15 . An IoT‐based smart system always needs actionable insights at the required time that avoid further damage when an incident has occurred.…”
