In Cloud, Can Scientific Communities Benefit from the Economies of Scale?

Abstract: Abstract-The basic idea behind cloud computing is that resource providers offer elastic resources to end users. In this paper, we intend to answer one key question to the success of cloud computing: in cloud, can small-to-medium scale scientific communities benefit from the economies of scale? Our research contributions are three-fold: first, we propose an innovative public cloud usage model for small-to-medium scale scientific communities to utilize elastic resources on a public cloud site while maintaining t… Show more

“…The proposed optimization technique is used to minimize the scheduling throughput to service all the diversified requests according to the different resource allocator available under cloud computing environment. Wang et al (2012) proposed a public cloud usage model for small-to-medium scale scientific communities to utilize elastic resources on a public cloud site. Also, implemented an innovative system named Dawning Cloud, at the core of which a lightweight service management layers running on top of a common management service framework.…”

“…Certainly, this is a creative blending of innovative internet services and notions that are useful for the future economic solutions [2], [3]. Stakeholders engaged in computing business chain can save their financial investment substantially in terms of hardware, data storage utilization, and computational power by availing the benefits of this novel electronic-trade model [4]. Lately, customers from every field are gaining the advantages of CC [5].…”

“…However, L. Wang et al [1] have proved that private cloud needs separate skilled staff to manage the whole systems and only research communities belonging to same institution shared the same cloud resources. Paper [1] concludes that hybrid cloud is not good for some parallel applications due to complexity and network delay. According to L. Wang et al [1] public cloud can provide solutions of all the issues of private and hybrid cloud.…”
