Show more

“…However, as may be expected, the levels of cross-reactivity were higher when serum samples were tested against BoHV-5 isolates than against BoHV-1 isolates. The serological cross-reactivity between BoHV-1 and BoHV-5 has also been demonstrated in other vaccine studies (Petzhold et al 2001, Vogel et al 2002, Silva et al 2007a.…”

“…vaccination is still insipient in most South American countries including Brazil and DIVA vaccines are not commercially available nowadays in the country (Silva et al 2007a). Specific control of BoHV-5 infections is restricted to farms where clinical cases had been diagnosed.…”

“…Although the presence of neutralizing antibodies in serum does not necessarily correlate with reduction of virus shedding or clinical protection in BoHV-1 vaccinated animals, induction of virus neutralizing antibodies is very often used to access immune responses to vaccination (Kramps et al 2004, Patel et al 2005, Silva et al 2007). The neutralizing antibody titers obtained after two doses of the inactivated 265gE -vaccine were higher than those detected after vaccination with one dose of the attenuated vaccine prepared with the same recombinant (Franco et al 2002a).…”

“…In the northern hemisphere, the occurrence of BoHV-5 infections is rare [9,10]. Inactivated and modified live vaccines have been used worldwide in an attempt to control herpesvirus infections in cattle [11], and most of these are based on BoHV-1 strains [12,13]. Crossprotection against BoHV-1 and BoHV-5 may occur as the proteomes are highly conserved, average 82.0% [14,15]; however, this is not always the case [16].…”
