“…Research suggests that depressive disorders such as Bipolar Disorder and Major Depression are highly comorbid with PGD (Kim et al, 2006), yet the nature of these relationships has not been fully delineated. A recent study implicating impulsivity as a mediator of depression and PG (Clarke, 2006) suggests that gambling may be an impulsive behavior used to offset dysphoria in at-risk individuals. It is possible that the BPD traits are associated with gambling in the presence of painful affective states.…”

“…Treatment of individuals with personality disorders should include assessment and monitoring of gambling behavior, irrespective of a substance abuse/dependence diagnosis. Given the associations found between personality disorders, depressive symptoms, and gambling, testing of causal models such as the Pathways Model (Blaszczynski et al, 2002;Clarke, 2006) is indicated. Our findings further implicate the importance of future research into the role of race/ethnicity and socio-economic status in the etiology and persistence of PG and PGD.…”

“…Impulsivity, in particular, is highly correlated with and predictive of problem gambling behaviour in youth Pagani, Derevensky, & Japel, 2010;Shead, Derevensky, & Gupta, 2010;Vitaro, Arseneault, & Tremblay, 1997, 1999, adults (Shenassa, Paradis, Dolan, Wilhelm, & Buka, 2012;Walther et al, 2012), university students (Clarke, 2006;Lightsey & Hulsey, 2002), and treatment-seeking gamblers (Maccallum, Blaszczynski, Ladouceur, & Nower, 2007;Steel & Blaszczynski, 1998;Tang & Wu, 2012).…”

“…A number of factors related to student gambling have been investigated, such as impulsivity (Holt, Green, & Myerson, 2003), depression (Clarke, 2006), suicide (Ladouceur, Dubé, & Bujold, 1994), alcohol and drug use (Lesieur et al, 1991;Winters et al, 1998), sensation seeking (Langewisch & Frisch, 1998), criminal activity (Ladouceur et al, 1994), and gambling motivation (Neighbors et al, 2002). Despite erroneous gambling-related cognitions receiving far more attention in recent times, they are rarely investigated with educational populations and as such merit investigation.…”
