Improving the Efficiency of Strip Cladding by the Control of Electrode Metal Transfer

Abstract: The technology and equipment for pulsed feed of strip electrode for electric arc cladding was developed. The influence of transfer control parameters on the electrode melting process was investigated. Found that pulsing feed of the strip electrode provides optimum heat input into the base metal, stable penetration without defects of the bead formation.

“…Paper [9] proposed a method for ultrasonic treatment of particles of the enriched ore materials in order to better clean grains of the useful component from the gangue. A positive effect is also noted of ultrasonic oscillations on the formation of gas bubbles and maintaining a cavitation regime, which also improves efficiency of flotation [10,11].…”

“…The material is sprayed by means of an air jet. The working pressure of compressed air is 0.5-0.6 MPa, the flow rate is 60-150 m 3 [11,12]. To form the air-spray jet, spray heads with cylindrical nozzles are used.…”

“…Mechanical forced transfer of the electrode metal makes it possible to not only control quality and geometric parameters of welded joints, but also significantly reduce energy used to add heat into a welding bath. The use of controlled mechanical electrode metal transfer at surfacing under a hard flux using a ribbon electrode ensures an improved efficiency when melting an electrode metal, as well as reduces energy intensity in the process of surfacing [6].…”

“…The oscillation amplitude of ribbon electrodes' ends is related to the magnitude of eccentricity and the distance between the ribbon electrodes, as well as the mass of drops of the electrode's metal, whose magnitude is determined by the cam's frequency of rotation. We have studied an oscillation frequency range of ribbons within f=30÷70 Hz, defined as important to control the transfer of an electrode's metal [6][7][8]. The process of surfacing when using two ribbon electrodes, even when applying the fluxes recommended for arc welding, occurs partially as the electroslag process, because a certain percentage of current is shunted by the molten slag.…”

“…However, because of the high cost, which exceeds several times the price of a welding sources without a PFC, the distribution of such supplies is very much hampered. The high cost is due to the more complicated power processing in the supply with the PFC [18]. This makes it necessary to carry out further research and find ways to create new energy-efficient welding sources with improved technical and economic characteristics.…”
