Improving spatio-temporal resolution of infrared images to detect thermal activity of defect at the surface of inorganic glass

Abstract: International audienceThis paper proposes a noise suppression methodology to improve the spatio-temporal resolution of infrared images. The methodology is divided in two steps. The first one consists in removing the noise from the temporal signal at each pixel. Three basic temporal filters are considered for this purpose: average filter, cost function minimization (FIT) and short time Fast Fourier Transform approach (STFFT). But while this step effectively reduces the temporal signal noise at each pixel, the i… Show more

“…To map the natural heating of the different materials on stained-glass windows, it is necessary to use infrared (IR) thermography, a portable technique capable of measuring in situ the temperature on different areas and over time. This technique has been applied to evaluate the thermal efficiency of different windows systems [21,22], as well as, to evaluate glasses with different industrial purposes [23][24][25][26], to research fire endurance of tempered glass [27], to study the mechanical defects and the elastic deformations on glass sheets [28][29][30][31][32], and to analyze the efficiency of solar cells [33,34]. The application of IRthermography on historical glasses is scarce [20,32,33]; nevertheless, these studies proved to be a useful tool to evaluate the conservation of historical stained-glass windows [35,36].…”

“…Moreover, the high reflectance of glasses, mainly at incidence angles higher than 45 degrees, can produce erroneous temperature estimations. 36,37 Nevertheless, IR thermography has been applied successfully to evaluate windows for industrial purposes, [38][39][40][41] to research fire endurance of tempered glass, 42 to study the mechanical defects and the elastic deformations on glass sheets, [43][44][45][46][47] to analyze the efficiency of solar cells 37,48 and to detect damages on fiber optics. 49,50 Stained-glass windows are composed by glasses, which can be painted with enamels and grisailles, mounted on lead cames to form window panels.…”

“…Note that such a filter reduces the noise. The kernel size has to be lower than a quarter of the signal period [12]. Applying this filter leads to a demodulated field where noisy zones disappear.…”
