Improving Retinal Image Quality Using the Contrast Stretching, Histogram Equalization, and CLAHE Methods with Median Filters

Abstract: This paper performs three different contrast testing methods, namely contrast stretching, histogram equalization, and CLAHE using a median filter. Poor quality images will be corrected and performed with a median filter removal filter. STARE dataset images that use images with different contrast values for each image. For this reason, evaluating the results of the three parameters tested are; MSE, PSNR, and SSIM. With the gray level scale image and contrast stretching which stretches the pixel value by stretch… Show more

“…Higher MSE values indicate that there is a significant difference between original and distorted images. This implies that these images are of poor quality [ 16 ]. On the other hand, low MSE values are the preferred standard for quality images.…”

“…This paper uses CLAHE 19 to enhance the image contrast, and CLAHE obtains more details of the image by improving the local contrast of the image. CLAHE clips the histogram with a pre‐defined threshold to change the slope of the cumulative histogram (CDF), which, in turn, affects the slope of the transform function to achieve the purpose of contrast clipping.…”

“…To assess the effect of the change in a frame due to the encryption, PSNR [20] can be very useful in measuring the error between the encrypted and the original frames. The lower value of PSNR reflects the higher noise and hence the more degradation due to encryption.…”
