Improving Physical Layer Secrecy Using Full-Duplex Jamming Receivers

Abstract: Abstract-This paper studies secrecy rate optimization in a wireless network with a single-antenna source, a multi-antenna destination and a multi-antenna eavesdropper. This is an unfavorable scenario for secrecy performance as the system is interference-limited. In the literature, assuming that the receiver operates in half duplex (HD) mode, the aforementioned problem has been addressed via use of cooperating nodes who act as jammers to confound the eavesdropper. This paper investigates an alternative solution… Show more

“…Jamming the eavesdropper is an emerging approach to enhance the quality of secure wireless transmissions [12][13][14][15]. In [12], a cooperative jamming scheme is studied to help a legitimate user improve its data rate via sending jamming signal to eavesdropper.…”

“…They study the power allocations for the transmitting and jamming users, and show that significant rate gains may be achieved when the eavesdropper has much higher SNR than the receivers. In [13], a self-protection scheme is developed to transmit the jamming signal to degrade the channel of eavesdropper. Using the proposed full-duplex scheme, the system is shown to be no longer interferencelimited, in contrast to the half-duplex case.…”

“…This way, the cognitive radio may lose some transmission opportunities, but the lifetime of the cognitive radio increases, and data transmission security is also assured. Further, in case we are dealing with a real-time system, the quality of the cognitive channel can be improved with respect to the eavesdropper channel by adding artificial noise to the eavesdropper through the cooperation of friendly jammers [13,14,15].…”
