Improving Color Accuracy of Colorimetric Sensors

Abstract: Accurate measurements of reflectance and color require spectrophotometers with prices often exceeding $3000. Recently, new “color instruments” became available with much lower prices, thanks to the availability of inexpensive colorimetric sensors. We investigated the Node+ChromaPro and the Color Muse, launched in 2015 and 2016 by Variable Inc. Both instruments are colorimeters, combining a colorimetric sensor with LED lighting. We investigated color accuracy compared to a high-end spectrophotometer from BYK Ga… Show more

“…The color accuracy of the NCS ColorPIN II can also be expressed as the alignment with 20 to 80 times more expensive spectrophotometers, and we have shown before that this is often better than dE CMC(1:1) <2.0 22 . Below we will see that this accuracy makes it well suitable for measuring the colors in this investigation.…”

“…Although there exist special research cameras that can provide such information, they are expensive and not available to the general user. Examples where colorimetrically accurate recording is desired include the measurement of textile patterns, 1 , 2 paint color matching, 3 art archival, 4 , 5 and medicine 6 , 7 . For such applications, being able to use an existing consumer camera would provide an affordable option.…”

“…For both types of instruments, colour variation of the solution has been manipulated to create a signal that represents the measured parameter based on its absorbance behaviour. The use of several optical colour sources requires complex computation and processing task that complicates its development [15], [16]. Monochromatic light source is preferred in some applications with the advantages of a single wavelength implementation to reduce the complexity of processing and its design requirement.…”
