Spruce seedlings [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] were exposed in nutrient solutions to a range of concentrations of HgCl2 and CH3HgCl for 7 weeks. The mineral, chlorophyll and water contents of the needles, and dry weights of root and needles were then estimated. The rates of photosynthesis, transpiration and dark respiration of the intact plants were determined using a Li‐cor portable photosynthesis‐measuring system. CO2 uptake decreased as the supply of both forms of Hg increased. Rates of transpiration were significantly reduced only after exposure to CH3HgCl. Similar concentrations of Hg were found in needles independent of the form of Hg supplied. Decreased rates of CO2 uptake at 100 nM HgCl2 and 1 nM CH3HgCl could be explained by lower levels of chlorophyll, and by lower levels of chlorophyll and closed stomata at all other CH3HgCl concentrations. Only at 1000 nM HgCl2 were other photosynthetic parameters affected. Decreased rates of transpiration and the lower chlorophyll levels in the needles did not appear to be due to the direct action of Hg, but rather to root damage that leads to a decrease in water supply and nutrient levels in the needles.

Kinetin alleviates the influence of waterlogging and salinity on growth and affects the production of plant growth regulators in Vigna sinensis and Zea mays

Growth criteria (shoot height, root length and dry weight) of 14-d-old Vigna sinensis and Zea mays were mostly suppressed by waterlogging or salinization using artificial seawater mixture during the subsequent 3 weeks; the water level in pots was, respectively, kept at 120% or 60% of water field capacity. The suppression in growth induced by salinization was greater than that obtained by waterlogging. The pattern of changes in growth appeared similar to chlorophyll a and b as well as activity of d-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALA-D). On the other hand, waterlogging significantly increased indole-acetic acid (IAA) in shoots of both species but salinity had a decreasing effect. Both treatments decreased gibberellic acid (GA 3) levels in shoots of Vigna sinensis and Zea mays as well as zeatin in shoots of Zea mays. Meanwhile, abscisic acid (ABA) was greatly accumulated in shoots of the stressed plants. Foliar application of 50 ppm kinetin counteracted the resulting reduction in growth and in chlorophylls of both species but partially lowered the inhibition in ALA-D activity. Moreover, kinetin increased IAA, GA 3 and zeatin in the stressed plants to mostly reach control levels, but markedly reduced ABA. These findings indicate that relief of the damage and restoration of normal conditions was maintained either partially or completely by application of kinetin. This recovery may be a consequence of several roles played by such hormones, which can cause triggering of the internal cellular metabolism and also induce alterations in the ratios of growth regulators. plant growth regulators / salinity / Vigna sinensis / waterlogging / Zea mays Résumé-La kinétine permet d'éviter l'effet de la submersion et de la salinité sur la croissance et affecte la production de régulateurs de croissance chez Vigna Sinensis et Zea mays. La croissance (hauteur des parties aériennes, longueur des racines et poids sec) de plantules de Vigna sinensis et Zea mays âgées de 14 jours a été arrêtée principalement par la submersion ou la salinisation en utilisant un mélange artificiel d'eau de mer durant les 3 semaines suivantes ; le niveau d'eau dans les pots a été maintenu respectivement à 120 % et 60 % de la capacité au champ. L'effet négatif sur la croissance induit par la salinisation était plus important que celui obtenu par la submersion. La forme des modifications de la croissance est apparue similaire pour la chlorophylle A & B, aussi bien que pour l'activité de l'acide d-aminolevulinique déhydratase (ALA-D). Moderate drought stress increases the root‐to‐shoot ratio in sugar‐beet plants. The question arises whether abscisic acid occurs in these plants and whether it plays a role in their adaptation to limited water supply. Thus, after identification by GC/MS, the content of free ABA and its alkaline hydrolysable conjugates was determined by capillary GLC in sugar‐beet plants of pot and field experiments with differentiated water supply. It was shown that leaves had a higher content of free ABA than tap roots. Within the leaf apparatus the young organs contained more ABA than the fully developed leaves. Moderate drought stress increased both free and alkaline hydrolysable ABA contents in leaves of intact plants, whereas the ABA content of tap roots was not demonstrably influenced. In contrast, severe and rapid osmotic stress treatment of detached leaves by dipping the petioles in mannitol solutions increased the free ABA content at the expense of the hydrolysable conjugates. This suggests an ABA release by the latter. Therefore, sugar‐beet plants seem to have two mechanisms for increasing the free ABA content under drought stress conditions: the gradual synthesis of ABA including its conjugates and the release of free ABA from ABA conjugates.
