Improvement of the Iraqi Super Grid Performance Using HVDC/HVAC Links by the Integration of Large-Scale Renewable Energy Sources

Abstract: The increasing use of renewable energy sources (RES) and their integration into transmission systems requires extensive studies to get more benefits from these sources. Stability analysis is one of the most crucial issues in these systems, and therefore needs to be studied in depth. In this paper, an analytical study was conducted for the stability assessment of the Iraqi super grid after adding a solar power plant with a capacity of 1000 MW using both HVAC and HVDC links for comparison purposes. Thus, the obj… Show more

“…Therefore, the UAE intends to spend 160 billion dollars in the renewable industry over the next two decades. According to this problem, 68 Currently, this country has about 2.4 GW of total renewable capacity, which is expected to reach 9.1GW by 2025, which is mostly solar [24]. The demographic makeup of men and women working in SPPs is a serious concern.…”

“…It is intriguing that the majority of nations do not have this level of light intensity. It is notable that Iraq has more bright winter days than other countries [68]. In reality, Iraq lacks an electricity grid and electricity sales to the grid; however, in 2018, the Iraqi Ministry of Energy began discussions with international organizations regarding electricity sales and purchase tariffs (FIT) and grid measurement models in the presence of renewable power plants.…”

“…Compared to traditional AC transmission, VSC-HVDC can enhance the voltage stability by providing extra reactive power [17]. In [18], the stability analysis was carried out for a 100MW solar plant through a connection of HVDC. Reference [19] implemented a system simulation and showed the voltage at PCC during a three-phase short circuit fault.…”

“…But the power electronic conversion devices required by direct-drive wind power generation systems are no longer impossible. The problem is that direct-drive permanent magnet wind turbines have been well developed, D-PMSG operation is more reliable, and the application prospects are promising [1][2][3][4]. But there is not much research on the LVRT technology of D-PMSG systems [5][6].…”
