Earthquake-resistant design of structures requires dissipating seismic energy by deformations of structural members or additional fuse elements. Owing to its easy-to-produce, plug-and-play, high equivalent damping ratio, and large displacement capacity characteristics, energy dissipative steel cushions (SCs) were found to be an efficient candidate for this purpose. However, similar to other conventional metallic dampers, residual displacement after a strong shaking is the most notable drawback of the SCs. In this work, cushions produced from Ni–Ti shape memory alloy (SMA) are evaluated numerically by experimentally verified finite element models to assess their impact on the performance of earthquake-resistant structures. Furthermore, a reinforced concrete testing frame is retrofitted with energy dissipative steel and Ni–Ti cushions. Performance of the frames (e.g. dissipated energy by the cushions, hysteretic energy to input energy ratio, maximum drift, and residual drift) with different types of cushions are evaluated by nonlinear response history analyses. The numerical results showed that the SCs are effective to reduce peak responses, while Ni–Ti cushions are more favorable to reduce residual drifts and deformations. Hence, a hybrid system, employing the steel and SMA cushions together, is proposed to reach optimal seismic performance.

SummaryThe concentrically braced frame (CBF) suffered from low dissipating energy capacity although it pertains to a high lateral elastic stiffness and ultimate strength. To overcome the shortcoming, in this paper, an innovative damper made of two butterfly‐shaped plates installed at the end of the diagonal member of the CBF was considered experimentally and numerically. Also, the required equations were presented to design the system. In an experimental study, the damper showed stable hysteresis loops without any degradation in stiffness and strength up to a rotation of 12% (0.12 rad). This rotation capacity is 50% greater than the AISC limitation. Also, the numerical study indicated that by increasing the angle of main plates, the structural parameters are improved as ultimate strength (Fu), 47% to 90%; stiffness (K), 64% to 97%; energy absorption (E), 23% to 11%; and overstrength (Ω), 59% to 96%. By reduction of the damper's height, the parameters Fu, K, E, and Ω are increased by 47% to 76%, 23% to 64%, 49% to 93%, and 23% to 27%, respectively. Moreover, although the geometry of the damper affected the elastic stiffness, the stiffness in the nonlinear zone was independent of the geometry of the damper. Correspondingly, the slenderness limitations were suggested as 15 for height to thickness ratio and 22 for wide to thickness ratio.

Semi‐rigid steel frame stands out due to its remarkable deformation capability under seismic loading, while the introduction of partitioned walls would disturb the expected seismic behavior of the infilled steel frames. Furthermore, the presence of door openings might exacerbate these negative effects. To mitigate the detrimental multiple‐diagonal strut effect of traditional infill walls around the door opening, an innovative low‐damage wall panels system: prefabricated infill wall panels with a door opening and sliding joints are presented for semi‐rigid steel frames. For testifying the effectiveness of the proposed structure, a quasi‐static test was carried out on three half‐scaled steel frames: a bare frame, a frame infilled with conventional wall panels with a door opening, and a frame infilled with the novel wall panel system with a door opening. Experimental results reveal that the developed innovative wall panels with a door opening could avoid unfavorable crack developments and opening deformation around the door area. It is mainly attributed to the releasement of the adverse multiple‐diagonal strut mechanism of traditional wall panels with door openings. Thus, the presented infilled frame showcases seismic performance similar to the bare steel frame, while having a higher energy dissipation capacity. Moreover, the developed analytical prediction method based on the superposition principle could accurately estimate the lateral load‐carrying capacity of the structures. Due to negligible deformation of the both bottom infill wall panel and the door opening, the innovative infill wall only contributes about 10% lateral load‐carrying capability to the infilled frame.
