Improvement of mechanical properties of graphene oxide/poly(allylamine) composites by chemical crosslinking

Abstract: Graphite oxide was prepared by oxidation of graphite using the Hummers method, and its ultrasonication in water yielded dispersed graphene oxide (GO) sheets. These sheets were then crosslinked with a water soluble polymer, namely poly (allylamine) hydrochloride (PAH), by cabodiimide coupling. Free standing composite films were obtained by filtration. These crosslinked composites showed better mechanical properties than unmodified GO films and those of composites that were made by simple mixing of GO and PAH. T… Show more

“…Therefore, to fully utilize all possible functions of GO fi lms and its composites, effective cross-linking of GO is highly demanded. The fi rst cross-linking recipe introduced was with poly(allylamine) (PAA) [ 126 ] in 2009, in which Park et al [ 126 ] and later on Satti et al [ 143 ] produced composite GO/PAA papers with enhanced tensile strength up to 146 MPa.…”

“…Moreover, the nanosheets may serve as connecting bridges to prevent the matrix from fracturing upon mechanical deformation, thus enhancing the mechanical properties of epoxy. Another reason may be that, during the casting process, the nanosheets are inclined to lay flat and oriented along the flow of epoxy resin direction, which is beneficial for the efficient stress transfer and thus reinforcing the mechanical properties of composites [48,49]. Table 2 summarizes the mechanical properties data.…”

“…But there is experimental evidence pointing out that the chemical linkage of the graphene to the polymer matrix enhances the properties of the composite material. The work of Satti et al [ 62 ] on GO/poly(allylamine) is a good example. Here, GO platelets were covalently bonded to the polymer matrix (amide formation between graphene carboxylic groups and polymer matrix amino groups), and theYoung's modulus and the tensile strength increased ca.…”
