Improvement of Diabetes Mellitus After Colorectal Cancer Surgery: A Retrospective Study of Predictive Factors For Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Remission and Overall Survival

Abstract: PurposeThe purpose of the current study was to evaluate the impact of colorectal cancer (CRC) surgery on type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and to analyze the change in T2DM on overall survival after CRC surgery.MethodsPatients who underwent CRC surgery were retrospectively enrolled from January 2013 to December 2019. The status of T2DM pre- and 1-year after CRC surgery was recorded, and predictive factors for T2DM remission and overall survival were analyzed.ResultsA total of 296 patients were included in this s… Show more

“…There were many factors that affected the prognosis of CRC, including age, tumor stage, and complications. [30][31][32] In this study, we had the similar findings consistent with previous studies. In this study, T2DM was not a predictive factor in multivariate analysis.…”

“…There were many factors that could affect the prognosis of CRC patients including tumor stage, BMI, T2DM, age and complications [ 3 , 21 24 ]. In this study, tumor stage and complications were independent predictors of CRC patients which was similar with previous studies [ 3 , 21 , 22 ].…”

“…There were many factors that could affect the prognosis of CRC patients including tumor stage, BMI, T2DM, age and complications [ 3 , 21 24 ]. In this study, tumor stage and complications were independent predictors of CRC patients which was similar with previous studies [ 3 , 21 , 22 ]. In addition, younger aged patients were associated with better prognosis than older aged patients, which meant that after radical CRC surgery, age was an important factor affecting the prognosis.…”

“…In addition, T2DM was not the predictive factor for OS (p = 0.595 > 0.05, HR = 0.876, 95% CI = 0.538-1.426) or DFS (p = 0.211>0.05, HR = 1.509, 95% CI = 0.792-2.874) (Tables 5, 6). T2DM is a metabolic disease, which is related to the onset of digestive tumors including gastric cancer, colorectal cancer, and esophageal cancer (9,19,20). In addition to the influence on tumor onset, T2DM might also affect the prognosis of patients, including OS, DFS, and cancer-specific survival (12,14).…”
