The Effect of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus on the Short-Term Outcomes and Prognosis of Stage I–III Colorectal Cancer: A Propensity Score Matching Analysis

Abstract: Purpose:The purpose of the current study was to analyze the effect of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) on the short-term outcomes and prognosis of stage I-III colorectal cancer (CRC) undergoing primary surgery. Methods: Patients who underwent primary CRC surgery were retrospectively collected from Jan 2011 to Jan 2020 in a single clinical center. The short-term outcomes and prognosis were compared between T2DM group and non-T2DM group using propensity score matching (PSM) analysis. Results: A total of 4250 pati… Show more

“…Therefore, it is important to analyze the surgical outcomes and stoma related complications elaborately. Furthermore, PSM was conducted to reduce the selection bias, which could benefit precise results when there was no difference in baseline information [26,27].…”

“…There were many factors which could affect the prognosis of CRC, including tumor stage, tumor size, age, body mass index (BMI), type 2 diabetes mellitus and so on ( 39 44 ). Prognostic indicators related to blood examination included lymphocyte count ratio (NLR), platelet count and lymphocyte count ratio (PLR), etc ( 31 , 45 , 46 ).…”

“…However, the association between T2DM and recurrence and death in local or regional CRC remains controversial (21)(22)(23)(24). Previous studies have reported that T2DM affects the OS and DFS of CRC patients (21,22).…”

“…However, other studies have reached contradictory conclusions (i.e., that pre-existing T2DM has no effect on the disease-specific and all-cause survival of CRC patients) (23). T2DM may not affect the OS and DFS of patients with stage I-III CRC (24). Moreover, the effect of T2DM on the survival of advanced CRC patients is yet to be fully elucidated.…”
