Improvement of ballast water disinfection using a photocatalytic (UV‐C + TiO2) flow‐through reactor for saltwater treatment

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Ultraviolet disinfection systems used for treating ballast water have several strict requirements such as short exposure time or high disinfection efficacy. Disinfection can be enhanced by a photocatalytic system triggered by ultraviolet light, leading to a reduction in the exposure time necessary and thus a general improvement in the treatment. The use of laboratory disinfection equipment and data modeling enabled determination of the expected treatment optimization. RESULTS: Photocatalysis enhanc… Show more

“…Other authors dismiss the effect of suspended solids in the tailing appearance; additionally, the tailing is observed in organisms subjected to chemical disinfection thus discarding the causes related with the shading against the UV irradiation . Previous studies using a collimated beam reactor and the pure strain of Escherichia coli ATCC 1229 as the indicator organism showed the existence of tailing once inactivated for approximately four log units of the initial concentration . Since the organism and water matrices were similar in these studies, it can be assumed that the appearance of tailing depends on the way that the UV dose is applied.…”

“…The area integral term was calculated numerically using an MS Excel spreadsheet. Previous experiments using the same UV device with salt tracer indicated the system works similarly to plug-flow using flow rates over 162 L h −1 , and the dose calculation and inactivating effects were assessed in bacteria and matched with a collimated beam reactor by biodosimetry (USEPA 2006;Romero-Martínez et al 2014;Moreno-Andrés et al 2016).…”
