Improved White Clover Control with Mesotrione by Tank-mixing Bromoxynil, Carfentrazone, and Simazine

Abstract: Mesotrione is under evaluation for registration in turfgrass for weed control, but often requires repeat treatments. Previous research in agricultural crops indicates tank mixtures with mesotrione improve weed control. Greenhouse trials were conducted in Blacksburg, VA, with 7 mo-old white clover, and field trials in Knoxville, TN, evaluated control of 5-yr old white clover in a stand of common bermudagrass. Data from both field and greenhouse trials indicate mesotrione applied in combination with bromoxynil, … Show more

“…This increase in crop injury was transient, with no synergistic response observed for plant density, dry weight (42 DAA), and yield. This interaction between a PSII inhibitor and a carotenoid biosynthesis inhibitor enhancing weed control has been observed in other experiments as well (Creech et al 2004;Armel et al 2005Armel et al , 2007Willis et al 2007). Both the PSII inhibitor and the HPPD inhibitor are known to affect and inhibit plastoquinone levels in plants.…”

“…Drift from unshielded sprayers can range from 1 to 16% of the applied herbicide rate (Maybank et al 1978;Wolf et al 1992). Mesotrione is a widely used herbicide for weed management in corn (Schuster et al 2008).…”
