2009. Simulated mesotrione drift followed by glyphosate, imazethapyr, bentazon or glyphosate plus chlorimuron in soybean. Can. J. Plant Sci. 89: 265Á272. There have been anecdotal accounts of increased crop sensitivity due to herbicide drift followed by an in-crop herbicide. An experiment was conducted from 2005 to 2007 at Elora, Ridgetown, and Woodstock, Ontario, to determine the effects of simulated mesotrione drift followed by in-crop applications of glyphosate, imazethapyr, bentazon and glyphosate plus chlorimuron on glyphosate-resistant soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] visual injury, plant height, plant density, shoot dry weight, and seed yield. As the rate of simulated mesotrione drift increased, there was an increase in soybean injury and a decrease in shoot dry weight, height, and yield. Simulated mesotrione drift followed by bentazon resulted in synergistic responses in injury shortly after application in some environments. This increase in injury was transient, with no synergistic responses in density, shoot dry weight, and yield. In contrast, antagonistic responses were observed when glyphosate, imazethapyr, or glyphosate plus chlorimuron were applied after simulated mesotrione drift in some environments. La de´rivede´rive simuleé du mesotrione suivie par l'application de bentazon engendre une reáction synergique peuaprè s le traitement, dans certaines conditions. La hausse des dommages estpassagè re, sans reáction synergique au niveau de la densite´dudensite´du peuplement, du poids sec des pousses et du rendement. Mesotrione {2-[4-(methylsulfonyl)-2-nitrobensoyl]-1,3-cyclohexanedione} is a herbicide that indirectly inhibits phytoene desaturase in plant tissues, the first step in the carotenoid biosynthesis pathway. The predominant symptom of mesotrione activity is tissue whitening with subsequent plant necrosis. In the current study, ‘Riviera’ bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.] was treated with mesotrione at 0.28 kg·ha−1 or untreated and sampled for tissue pigment concentrations at 0, 3, 7, 14, 21, 28, and 35 days after treatment (DAT). Visual tissue whitening in mesotrione-treated plants reached a maximum of 38% by 14 DAT; however, regreening of discolored tissue was observed by 21 DAT. Phytoene was only detected in mesotrione-treated plants at 3, 7, and 14 DAT. Pigments in treated plants decreased with initial tissue whitening; however, most recovered to untreated levels by 21 DAT. At 35 DAT, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, lutein, β-carotene, and zeaxanthin in mesotrione-treated plants had accumulated to levels exceeding untreated control plants. Results demonstrate that although mesotrione initially decreases bermudagrass pigment concentrations, treatment with this herbicide eventually results in higher concentrations of chlorophylls and carotenoids.

Mesotrione, topramezone, and tembotrione inhibit 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD), an enzyme integral to carotenoid biosynthesis. Research was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of visual bleaching and chlorophyll fluorescence yield (FyFJ measurements for esfimating common bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.] carotenoid and chlorophyll concentrations following mesotrione (0.28, 0.35, and 0.42 kg ha"'), topramezone (0.018, 0.025, and 0.038 kg ha"^), and tembotrione (0.092, 0.184, and 0.276 kg ha"') applications. Measurements of VB and FyF^ were evaluated 3, 7,14,21, 28, and 35 d after application. Leaf tissues were sampled on the same dates and assayed for chlorophyll and carotenoid compounds by using high-pressure liquid chromatography methodology. Carotenoid and total chlorophyll concentrations were regressed upon VB and F/F^ on each evaluation date. While significant (P < 0.05) relationships were detected on each date, variation explained by linear regression was modest (R2 < 0.65); thus, neither VB nor F/F,^ assessments are good predictors of carotenoid and chlorophyll concentrations after HPPD-inhibiting herbicide treatment. Comparisons of R'^ values for VB and F^F^ data suggest no advantage in using FyF^ in place of VB measurements when evaluating HPPD-inhibiting herbicide activity.
