“…Traditional aquaculture in this region results in rather poor fish yields (e.g. 1.5 tons ha -1 year -1 in Yen Chau District as reported by Steinbronn 2009 andPucher et al 2013). The production is limited by loss of pond productivity due to high turbidity in the ponds caused by the constant inflow of particles eroded from surrounding intensive agriculture.…”

“…The production is limited by loss of pond productivity due to high turbidity in the ponds caused by the constant inflow of particles eroded from surrounding intensive agriculture. Further, the production of grass carp, as the dominant species stocked in traditionally managed ponds, is endangered by the occurrence of a species-specific disease that causes mass mortalities of grass carp in Northern Vietnam (Edwards 2000;Steinbronn 2009;Pucher et al 2013) which may be linked with feeding fish with pesticide-contaminated leaf material from the fields (Steinbronn 2009;Pucher et al 2014c). To improve regional aquaculture production, modifications of the traditional pond management towards a more semi-intensive pond management were designed by researchers and introduced to farmers in the Yen Chau District, Son La Province, Northern Vietnam.…”

“…Such has been the case with aquaculture and rice farming in the Mekong Delta (Vietnam) (Pucher et al, 2013). Furthermore, despite clear advantages for adapting rice to climate change, the use of modern varieties with high tolerance to abiotic stresses such as submergence (Jagadish et al, 2012) also draws responsibilities for habitat management as marginal areas that were once a refuge for wildlife become more feasible for rice production.…”

“…Indeed, the burst of optimal and sustainable fish farming must necessarily use a dynamic resource available such as organic fertilizers (FAO 2012). Thus, organic fertilizer use is a suitable alternative for agricultural activities to improve fish productivity and yields (Pucher et al 2012;Bokossa et al 2014a). Steinbronn (2009) showed that aquaculture production contributes significantly to food security, generates income, and plays a significant role in farmers' livelihood strategies.…”
