Purpose The purpose of this paper is to propose a miniaturized tri-band bandstop filter that finds application in a modern dense communication system where size and multi-band plays a vital role. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, the authors propose a miniaturized tri-band microstrip bandstop filter which combines the conventional bandstop filter and spur microstrip line structures such that this design achieves tri-band operation at 1.8 GHz and 3 GHz. The overall length of the microstrip filter is found to reduce from 126 to 45 mm because of introduction of spur lines and via-hole grounding. The addition of spur lines replaces two resonators, introduces two additional resonant frequencies and enhances the −6 dB bandwidth of the center frequency by 14 %.The addition of via-holes in each resonator reduces its length into half of its original length, thereby reducing filter size. Findings Resonance occurs at three different frequencies 1.8, 2.4 and 3 GHz. The filter size reduces from 126 to 45 mm, and the −6 dB rejection bandwidth of center frequency improves by 14 %. Originality/value The overall filter size is reduced by 65% and it resonates at three different frequencies 1.8, 2.4 and 3 GHz with an improved bandwidth of 10 % around the center frequency.

This article introduces a new design and analysis of a compact reconfigurable bandpass/lowpass filter based on compact negative refractive index metamaterial transmission line. The filter equivalent circuit has been designed as a cascade of three cells of bisected-Π/Π configuration. The reconfigurable function was achieved using inserted switches in ON and OFF modes within the cells. The filter works as bandpass when all switches are in ON condition and for lowpass switch-1 is in OFF and switch-2 in ON condition. The low pass filter has 3-dB cutoff frequency of 3.25 GHz with a selectivity of 170 dB/GHz. The bandpass filter is cantered at 3.65 GHz and has a well-matched pass band with insertion loss of 0.2 dB and wide stop band with two transmission zeros (TZs). The frequency positions of TZs are independently varying with series and shunt loading elements.The filter performance has been validated through circuit model, electromagnetic simulation, and experimental measurements. The electrical size of bandpass filter excluding feed line is 0.22 λ g × 0.20 λ g (12 × 11 mm 2 ) at center frequency of 3.65 GHz and for lowpass filter is 0.19 λ g × 0.18 λ g at cutoff frequency of 3.25 GHz. ABSTRACT:The necessity of creating channels by utilizing narrow-bands in high frequency regions is a matter of concern for the next generation-oriented wireless communication systems. A microstrip bandpass filter for narrow-band applications has been proposed in this article. Two coupled line filters with tapered line resonators are loaded at the mid-points of two identical pairs of radial stubs. The scalable length of microstrip lines to extend the radial stubs provides over 536 MHz shift of the resonant frequency with a narrow-band at each perturbing step. The proposed filter has been designed on Taconic TLX-8 substrate with 0.5 mm thickness and its filtering parts occupy a nominal area of 131.09 mm 2 without feedlines. The fabricated filter exhibits nearly a 50 MHz pass-band at 6.428 GHz center frequency according to the measurement. Steep response of this filter entirely attenuates the out-band signal which enables it to be suitable for narrow-band applications in the higher frequency regions of C-band and ultra-wideband.
