With an increasing penetration of wind power in the modern electrical grid, the increasing replacement of large conventional synchronous generators by wind power plants will potentially result in deteriorated frequency regulation performance due to the reduced system inertia and primary frequency response. A series of challenging issues arise from the aspects of power system planning, operation, control and protection. Therefore, it is valuable to develop variable speed wind turbines (VSWTs) equipped with frequency regulation capabilities that allow them to effectively participate in addressing severe frequency contingencies. This paper provides a comprehensive survey on frequency regulation methods for VSWTs. It fully describes the concepts, principles and control strategies of prevailing frequency controls of VSWTs, including future development trends. It concludes with a performance comparison of frequency regulation by the four main types of wind power plants.

This paper proposes a short-term frequency-response scheme of a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG)-based wind turbine generator (WTG) for improving rotor speed recovery and frequency nadir. In the energy-releasing period, to improve the frequency nadir and rotor speed convergence by releasing a large amount of kinetic energy stored in the rotating masses in a DFIG-based WTG, the power reference is increased up to the torque limit referred to the power and reduces along with it for a predefined period which is determined based on the occurrence time of the frequency nadir in a power grid. Then, the reference decreases so that the rotor speed is forced to be converged to the preset value in the stable operating region of the rotor speed. In the energy-absorbing period, to quickly recover the rotor speed, the reference smoothly decreases with the rotor speed and time during a predefined period until it intersects with the maximum power point tracking curve. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme successfully achieves rapid frequency stabilization with the improved frequency nadir under various wind conditions based on the IEEE 14-bus system.

Permanent magnets are essential components for many biomedical systems and electromechanical devices, which may be made into flexible formats to achieve wearable monitoring and effective integration with biological tissues. However, the development of high‐performance flexible permanent magnets is challenging due to their ultrathin geometries, which contradict with the thickness‐dependent magnetic properties. In addition, magnetic membranes with controllable sequences of polarities are difficult to achieve. Here, origami techniques to achieve flexible permanent magnetic membranes with enhanced magnetic field strength and programmable sequences of polarities are presented. Linear Halbach arrays, circular Halbach arrays, and concentric magnets with thicknesses ranging from 130 to 500 µm and bending curvatures ranging from 0.039 to 0.0043 µm−1 are achieved through different folding mechanisms. The origami membranes offer a maximum field intensity of 72 mT and extremely strong magnetic force of 0.21 N cm−2, allowing various novel applications demonstrated through electronics interfacing, cell manipulations, and soft robotics. The origami techniques offer large magnetism and complex spatial field distribution, and enable practical use of thin flexible magnetic membranes in constructing miniaturized or even flexible electromechanical systems and biomedical instruments for magnetic resonance imaging, targeted drug delivery, health monitoring, and cancer therapy.
