Importance of the iron chelate formula for micropropagation of Rosa hybrida L. ‘Moneyway’

Abstract: In vitro propagation of the rose rootstock 'Moneyway' was investigated on the following media: Murashige and Skoog (MS), Quoirin and Lepoivre (QL) and Woody Plant (WP). Growth, which was measured as length of shoots after a 6-week period, was faster on MS and QL than on WP. In spite of the better growth, chlorosis of newly formed leaves occurred from the third week on and was correlated with a lower chlorophyll content of shoots.

“…Combinations of iron supplements at moderate levels have been reported to improve shoot growth and chlorophyll content in rose ( Van der Salm et al 1994) and Carica papaya cultures (Castillo et al 1997). In vivo application of FeEDDHA has also been reported to restore the green color in chlorotic leaves of soybean with a long-lasting effect in both soilless (Garcia-Marco et al 2006) and field conditions (Schenkeveld et al 2010).…”

“…A suboptimal culture medium may cause physiological disorders or tissue death (Van der Salm et al 1994; Barghchi and Alderson 1996), and as potted H. rosa-sinensis L. plants are sensitive to iron and calcium deficiency (P. Graff pers. comm.…”

“…The usual iron used in Humulus culture medium is based on the MS formulation (Murashige and Skoog, 1962). Sequestrene iron is used in plant growth media for various purposes (Van der Salm et al, 1994;Castillo et al, 1997;Tsao and Reed, 2002). We recently determined that culture medium with sequestrene iron greatly improved leaf color and growth of many species and cultivars of hops.…”
