Importance of Flexibility in Manufacturing Systems

Abstract: Flexibility refers to the ability of a manufacturing system to respond cost effectively and rapidly to changing production needs and requirements. This capability is becoming increasingly important for the design and operation of manufacturing systems, as these systems do operate in highly variable and unpredictable environments. It is important to system designers and managers to know of different levels of flexibility and / or determine the amount of flexibility required to achieve a certain level of perform… Show more

“…The third is flexibility strategy. Flexibility is defined as a manufacturing system's ability to respond effectively and quickly to changing production needs and requirements (Kaschel and Bernal, 2006). Manufacturing companies have to address the challenge posed by variable demand (Kusiak, 2019).…”

“…Kaschel and Sánchez y Bernal [34] proposed a model of the fuzzy logic and mathematical programming to determine the structural and behavior problems occurring in a manufacturing system. These approaches allow to operatively responding on unexpected changes in market requirements arising in up-to-date industrial environment.…”
