Importance of exercise training session duration in the rehabilitation of coronary artery disease patients

Abstract: In the early rehabilitation of CAD patients, 40-min exercise training sessions seem to be at least as effective for improving body anthropometrics, blood plasma lipid profile and exercise capacity, as compared with 60-min exercise training sessions.

“…However, two recent studies [42,98] failed to confirm this effect. This discrepancy may be due to a number of factors, including differences in subject characteristics and number, the timing of the blood samples taken, and the type, and the intensity and duration of the exercise intervention.…”

“…Indeed, the duration of the intervention seems to be crucial, since the majority of studies showing improvements in the markers of inflammation included at least a 12-week exercise intervention. The two studies mentioned previously included 4 [42] and 7 [98] weeks of exercise training. It is interesting to note that levels of CRP showed a trend of decreasing following the 7-week intervention.…”

“…However, not all the studies are univocal to confirm this relationship, infact two recent studies [299,300] failed to confirm this effect. This discrepancy may be due to a number of factors, including differences in subject characteristics and number, the timing of the blood samples taken, and the type, and the intensity and duration of the exercise intervention.…”

“…All the participants performed a maximal incremental 1-min stage cardiopulmonary cycloergometer exercise test [10] as executed in previous studies from our laboratory [11]. Following criteria were used to define maximal exercise effort during exercise testing: respiratory exchange ratio of greater than 1.10 and/or heart rate greater than 95% of maximal predicted value.…”
