Implications of the Dominant Design in Electronic Initiation Systems in the South African Mining Industry

Abstract: This article analyzes an emerging technological innovation, namely, electronic initiation systems for mining explosives in South Africa. The concept of electronic initiation is presenting itself as a challenge to traditional initiation systems, particularly cap-and-fuse and shock tube technologies. From a technology strategy viewpoint, the challenge is to determine the nature of the managerial decisions that have to be addressed. The UtterbackAbernathy innovation model is used to assess the evolution of the em… Show more

“…Although blast-free technologies are not yet considered to be serious competitors to blasting (because of higher cost and lower efficiency), the increase in focus in recent times on the safety of miners might well lead to increased research and development and use of some of these methods [8], such as the Cardox system. The Cardox system is designed to break or aerate materials by discharging carbon dioxide at high pressure into the material.…”

“…Rate of change refers to the speed of evolution within a specific industry both with respect to the technology and the market [83]. A high speed has a negative effect on the emergence of a dominant format [110]. The rate of change refers, for instance, to the speed at which new generations of the format are being introduced.…”
