Implications of removing or altering the testicles of ram lambs on the financial returns from carcasses

Abstract: Altering the influence of the testicles of male lambs is used to manipulate growth and body composition. To determine the effects on carcass weight and consequently returns to farmers, an analysis was undertaken from studies in the scientific literature in which animals were slaughtered at the same time. Each dataset was treated as if it were a random event and a model of sex type (including ram, cryptorchid, and wether) was fitted. Rams, cryptorchids and wethers slaughtered on the same date had similar carcas… Show more

“…Among them, castration facilitates the management, decreases aggressive behavior, and improve carcass characteristics, mainly through greater fat deposition and carcass yield, which can influence the commercial value of meat (Fisher, Bray, & Johnstone, 2010;Fogarty & Mulholland, 2012).Castration also reduces sheep aroma and flavor, but non-castrated fed intensively for short time should also produce meat without bad taste and with enough fat deposition. Animals that remain less time on feed and are harvested earlier might have less influence of sexual condition in carcass and meat characteristics.…”

“…The process of castration can be replaced if farmers are able to manage entire ram lambs as a distinct management group (Case study 2). There is evidence from New Zealand that there are production benefits to leaving males entire (Fisher and others 2010). While the liveweights in this study were matched between entire, cryptorchid and wethered (castrated) male lambs, there were carcase and cost:benefit downsides to leaving males entire.…”

“…The several management practices viz. castration, shearing and flushing were applied in finishing lambs to be increased production traits and improvement of meat quality traits those influence the commercial values of meat (Fisher et al, 2010). Castration reduces lamb aroma and flavor than non-castrated group.…”
