ObjectiveThyroid hormones can lower levels of atherogenic lipoproteins, and selenium is important in thyroid hormone homeostasis. We aimed to investigate the effects of a healthy diet associated with the Brazil nut (Bertholletia excelsa) in dyslipidemic and hypertensive patients.MethodsThis study was a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial. Seventy-seven dyslipidemic and hypertensive patients already receiving lipid-lowering drugs received either a dietary treatment associated with partially defatted Brazil nut flour (13 g/day providing 227,5 μg of selenium/day),or with dyed cassava flour as a placebo. All patients received a personalized dietary guideline with nutritional recommendations for dyslipidemia and hypertension and were followed for 90 days.ResultsThe Brazil nut group showed reductions in total cholesterol (−20.5 ± 61.2 mg/dL, P = 0.02), non HDL-cholesterol (−19.5 ± 61.2 mg/dL, P = 0.02) and Apo A-1 (−10.2 ± 26.7 mg/dL, P = 0.03) without significant alterations in the Apo B/Apo A-1 ratio. The placebo group showed a reduction in FT3 levels (−0.1 ± 0.4, P = 0.03) and increased Lp(a) levels (5.9 ± 18.0 mg/dL, P = 0.02). There were no statistical differences in blood pressure and serum lipids between Brazil nut and placebo group.ConclusionsSupplementation with Brazil nuts seems to favor the maintenance of FT3 levels and contributes to lipemia reduction in hypercholesterolemic and euthyroid patients. BackgroundAnimal studies have suggested beneficial effects of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in reducing body fat mass and improvement in the serum lipid profile and glycemia. However, these effects are controversial in humans. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of microencapsulated CLA supplementation on body composition, body mass index, waist circumference, and blood pressure in sedentary women with metabolic syndrome.MethodsThis study was a placebo-controlled and randomized clinical trial. Fourteen women diagnosed with metabolic syndrome received light strawberry jam enriched or not with microencapsulated CLA (3 g/day) as a mixture of 38.57% cis-9, trans-11, and 39.76% trans-10, cis-12 CLA isomers associated with a hypocaloric diet for 90 days. The subjects were monitored to assess variables associated with the metabolic syndrome, in addition to assessing adherence with the intervention.ResultsThere were no significant effects of microencapsulated CLA on the lipid profile or blood pressure. Mean plasma insulin concentrations were significantly lower in women supplemented with microencapsulated CLA (Δ T90 – T0 = −12.87 ± 4.26 μU/mL, P = 0.02). Microencapsulated CLA supplementation did not alter the waist circumference, but there was a reduction in body fat mass detected after 30 days (Δ = −2.68% ± 0.82%, P = 0.02), which was maintained until the 90-day intervention period (Δ = −3.32% ± 1.41%, P = 0.02) in the microencapsulated CLA group. The placebo group showed this effect only after 90 days (Δ = −1.97% ± 0.60%, P = 0.02), but had a reduced waist circumference (Δ T90 – T0 = −4.25 ± 1.31 cm, P = 0.03).ConclusionSupplementation with mixed-isomer microencapsulated CLA may have a favorable effect on glycemic control and body fat mass loss at an earlier time in sedentary women with metabolic syndrome, although there were no effects on lipid profile and blood pressure.
Considering the inadequacy of some antioxidant nutrients in severely obese adolescents, this study aimed to assess the relationship between antioxidant micronutrients status and metabolic syndrome components in metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) and unhealthy obesity (MUO). We performed an observational study in severely obese adolescents (body mass index > 99th percentile) and they were classified into MHO or MUO, according to the criteria adapted for adolescents. Anthropometric, biochemical, and clinical variables were analyzed to characterize the sample of adolescents. The serum antioxidant nutrients assessed were retinol, β-carotene, Vitamin E, Vitamin C, zinc and selenium. A total of 60 adolescents aged 17.31 ± 1.34 years were enrolled. MHO was identified in 23.3% of adolescents. The MHO group showed lower frequency of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (14.3% vs. 78.3%, p < 0.001) when compared to MUO. A correlation was found between retinol and β-carotene concentrations with glycemia (r = −0.372; p = 0.011 and r = −0.314; p = 0.034, respectively) and between Vitamin E with waist circumference (r = −0.306; p = 0.038) in the MUO group. The current study shows that some antioxidant nutrients status, specifically retinol, β-carotene, and Vitamin E, are negatively associated with metabolic alterations in MUO. Further studies are necessary to determine the existing differences in the serum antioxidant profile of metabolically healthy and unhealthy obese adolescents.

2020) Effect of tannins and monensin on feeding behaviour, feed intake, digestive parameters and microbial efficiency of nellore cowsABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the associative effect of monensin and tannins on intake, feeding behaviour, digestibility, rumen kinetics, microbial protein synthesis and nitrogen balance. In a 2 Â 4 factorial arrangement, 8 rumen cannulated Nellore cows were distributed in 2 contemporary 4 Â 4 Latin squares and received 8 diets that differed in the level of tannins (0.00, 0.75, 1.50 and 2.25% DM) and presence of monensin. Monensin was daily administered to each cow in one square (about 32 mg/kg DM). No interaction between monensin and tannins was observed (p > .05). Tannins linearly reduced feed intake, but linearly increased daily eating time (p < .05), although these did not alter the number of meals. Monensin increased CP digestibility by 6% (p ¼ .0387) while tannins linearly reduced digestibility of DM, CP, OM and TDN, whereas the reduction was quadratic for ADF and NDF. Tannins linearly reduced the rumen disappearance rate by linearly reducing both passage and digestion rates. Tannins also linearly reduced urinary urea, though neither additive affected microbial protein synthesis. Monensin reduced the proportion of N excreted in faeces, whereas tannins linearly increased faecal N and linearly reduced both urinary and retained N. Monensin and tannins have shown independent effects on feeding behaviour, feed intake, digestive parameters, microbial protein synthesis and N balance, but they did not improve nutrient usage, although monensin alone has shown to have potential to promote N utilisation. Tannins may play an important role in reducing the excretion of N in urine. HIGHLIGHTSTannins reduce the efficiency of nutrient usage in cattle. Tannins change the pathway of the excretion of the feeding nitrogen. The emission of N 2 O from the urine may be reduced by the use of tannins in cattle feeding. The meta-analysis of Duffield et al. (2012) shows that monensin reduces DMI and improves average daily gain through improvement of feed efficiency. But other studies, such as of Hamilton et al. (2010), Mullins et al. (2012) and Perna Junior et al. (2017 found no effect, suggesting that the effect may vary among studies. The objectives of this study were to evaluate and compare the effect of the corn grain processing (whole grain, dry beans ground, and wet grain) on carcass characteristics and meat quality in lambs. Twenty-two Dorper vs. Santa Inês uncastrated lambs (27 ± 4 kg BW; ±3 months old) were distributed in a randomized complete block (initial BW). The diets were composed of 20 % protein-mineral pellet, 5 % hay, and 75 % corn in the form of whole grain, ground grain, or wet grain. The harvest weight of animals fed whole corn (50.2 kg) and ground (49.03 kg) were equal and higher than the moisture corn fed lambs (44.89 kg); therefore, the same differences were expected to be seen in the cold vs hot carcass comparison. However, there was no difference between treatments comparing hot or cold carcass performance, averaging 47 and 46 %, respectively. Also unaffected by the treatments were subcutaneous fat thickness values, loin muscle area, pH, temperature, drip loss, water loss by cooking, color, and tenderness. It can be concluded that the shape and size of corn grain in diets of high concentrate resulted in no measurable influence on carcass traits, but whole grain is more easily managed by the producer.
ABSTRACT. For this research 48 male lambs were divided in randomized blocks in a factorial design, having as factors sexual condition (castrated or uncastrated) and time on feed (36 or 78 days). High grain diet was monitored daily to measure the performance of the animal nutrition. The characteristics of the carcass and meat were taken for the fatty acids profile and sensorial analysis. The effect of the factors as sexual condition and time on feed, and the interaction between them, were evaluated by analysis of variance using the GLM procedure of SAS software and the treatment averages were compared by Student's T test. The uncastrated animals presented greater weight gain and dry matter intake, better feed efficiency, and larger loin area. More time on feed resulted in higher weight at slaughter. Parameters such as pH, color, meat tenderness and sensorial attributes were not affected by treatments. For the fatty acid profile there was effects and interactions between sexual condition and time on feed. It is concluded that castration should not be used when the animal is young and slaughtered and feed intensively, but neutering can be interesting to improve the fatty acid profile of the meat.Keywords: castrated, Dorper, fatty acids, meat, Santa Inês, sheep.Período de confinamento e efeito do sexo sobre o desempenho e características de qualidade da carne de cordeiros RESUMO. No experimento realizado, foram utilizados 48 cordeiros machos divididos em blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial, sendo tais fatores: a condição sexual (castrado ou não castrado) e tempo de confinamento (36 ou 78 dias). Uma dieta rica em grãos foi ofertada e controlada diariamente para medir o desempenho da nutrição animal, as características da carcaça e da carne foram avaliadas, e foi feita análise sensorial. A condição sexual e o tempo em confinamento, bem como a interação entre eles, foram avaliados por análise de variância, utilizando o procedimento GLM do software SAS e as médias dos tratamentos foram comparadas pelo teste t de estudante (p < 0,05). Os animais não castrados apresentaram maior ganho de peso e consumo de matéria seca. Eles também tiveram uma melhor eficiência alimentar e área de lombo. Mais tempo no confinamento resultou em maior peso ao abate. Parâmetros como pH, cor, maciez da carne e atributos sensoriais não foram afetados pelos tratamentos. Para o perfil de ácidos graxos, houve efeitos e as interações entre condição sexual e tempo de confinamento. Concluiu-se que a castração não deve ser usada quando o animal é novo e criado em sistema intensivo, mas a castração pode ser interessante para melhorar o perfil de ácidos graxos da carne.
