This study aims to assess the additional Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions affected by straw removal from the soil surface in sugarcane areas, including measurement of short-term soil CO 2 -C emissions plus emissions associated with the recovery and transport operations of straw bales until to the industry gate (diesel emissions) and estimated soil N 2 O emission, comparing with leaving all straw on the soil surface. Taking into account the main sources evaluated (soil CO 2 , diesel and N 2 O from straw), the total additional GHG emissions from the recovery of 6.9 Mg Dry Matter ha -1 (27%) was estimated at 1423 kg CO 2 eq ha -1 , resulting in a carbon footprint of 206.2 kg CO 2 eq per megagram (Mg) of straw recovered. Applying the parameters cited in this study for electricity generation (GHG emission and offset potential), our results showed an additional GHG emission of (+) 860 kg CO 2 eq ha -1 . Applying the same parameters for second generation (2G) ethanol production replacing gasoline, an avoided GHG emission of (-) 2316 kg CO 2 eq ha -1 could be achieved. The route of recovering 27% of sugarcane straw from the soil surface through bale system for bioelectricity production using the technical parameters and industrial efficiency rate of this case study resulted in a C footprint of 347 kg CO 2 eq MWh -1 . Improving the efficiency rate for straw conversion in bioelectricity based on its lower heating value could reduce its C footprint to 62.26 kg CO 2 eq MWh -1 produced. “…Carvalho et al evaluaron diferentes fuentes de fertilizantes de N (orgánicas, sintéticas y sus combinaciones) para cultivos de caña de azúcar, encontrando que el promedio de emisiones de N2O por N aplicado fue del 0.60%, lo que es 40% menor al factor de emisión (FE) estipulado por el IPCC (1%). Sin embargo, el promedio de emisiones de N2O por N aplicado, por combinación de fertilizante de nitrogenado, como nitrato de amonio, sulfato de amonio o urea, con VC (práctica común en Brasil) fue de 1.12%, con una gran variación (0.13-3.03%) (41) . Estas mayores emisiones de N2O asociadas a la aplicación de vinaza en los campos de caña de azúcar están probablemente relacionadas a la estimulación de los microbios del suelo con las cargas de carbono orgánico y nitrógeno que aumentan la actividad microbiana con el incremento de los nitrificantes y las comunidades heterótrofas disminuyendo así, la disponibilidad de oxígeno y potenciando la producción de N2O (37) .…”

La vinaza de caña de azúcar (VC) es el principal subproducto de la producción de bioetanol. Esta se considera un potencial contaminante debido a su índice de acidez y a la presencia de componentes orgánicos, sólidos en suspensión y metales pesados. Los altos niveles de producción de VC son sin duda una amenaza para el ambiente y la comunidad en general. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar las principales disposiciones o tratamientos de VC, además de sus aplicaciones, empleando mapas bibliométricos para el análisis de metadatos. Se encontró que los principales focos de estudio con relación a la VC son: (i) digestión anaeróbica (DA), (ii) fertirrigación, (iii) coagulación/floculación, (iv) algas, microalgas y hongos, y (v) producción de hidrógeno. Adicionalmente, se determinó que el tratamiento más efectivo para VC fue la DA, alcanzando una eficiencia de 90% en la remoción de demanda química de oxígeno y una recuperación energética entre 85 y 95% como biogás. Finalmente, se abordaron los desafíos y oportunidades que enfrenta Latinoamérica con la creciente producción de VC, así como una revisión detallada de su tratamiento y/o disposición, incluyendo condiciones óptimas para la producción de productos de valor agregado.

IntroductionThe contrasting weather conditions throughout the sugarcane harvest period in south-central Brazil (April to November) influence fertilization management in sugarcane ratoon.MethodsThrough field studies carried out over two cropping seasons, we aimed to compare the performance of sugarcane at sites harvested in the early and late periods of the harvest season as a function of fertilizer sources associated with application methods. The design used in each site was a randomized block in a 2 x 3 factorial scheme; the first factor consisted of fertilizer sources (solid and liquid), and the second factor consisted of application methods (above the straw, under the straw, and incorporated into the middle of the sugarcane row).ResultsThe fertilizer source and application method interacted at the site harvested in the early period of the sugarcane harvest season. Overall, the highest sugarcane stalk and sugar yields at this site were obtained with the incorporated application applying liquid fertilizer and under straw applying solid fertilizer, with increments of up to 33%. For the site harvested in the late period of the sugarcane harvest season, the liquid fertilizer promoted a 25% higher sugarcane stalk yield compared to the solid fertilizer in the crop season with low rainfall in the spring, while in the crop season with normal rainfall, there were no differences between treatments.DiscussionThis demonstrates the importance of defining fertilization management in sugarcane as a function of harvest time, thereby promoting greater sustainability in the production system
