Implementing Circular Economy Techniques for the Optimal Management of Recyclable Solid Waste Using the M-GRCT Decision Support Model

Abstract: This article analyzes the implementation of a circular economy model for the management of reusable solid waste in the Colombian municipalities of Arbeláez (province of Cundinamarca) and Tibasosa (province of Boyacá). The analysis is conducted using M-GRCT, a circular economy decision support model for the design of recyclable waste management systems in low-income municipalities. The model allows for performing calculations on a set of two scenarios integrating a sociocultural dynamics assessment—this being a… Show more

“…According to Zhang et al [6], Circular Economy is an economic development model consisting of resources-products-renewable resources and repeated circulation of materials based on the principles of reduce, reuse and recycle. Natural resource depletion and increased waste generation have contributed to the emergence of the concept of a "circular economy" as a new paradigm opposed to the standard "linear economy" [7]. While there are other schools of thoughts that have more than 3Rs, the scope of this paper is just the 3Rs.…”

“…One of the most relevant environmental issues in modern cities is municipal solid waste (MSW) management. Recent studies have been made in China [1], Russia [2], Hong Kong [3], Turkey [4], Italy [5], Colombia [6] and Spain [7]. Recent reviews about the sustainable management of municipal solid waste are also available in the scientific literature [8] and specific studies on food packaging management [9] and the environmental impacts induced by food waste in America [10] and in Europe [11] have also been done.…”
