Implementing and Monitoring the Use of Artificial Canopy Bridges by Mammals and Birds in an Indonesian Agroforestry Environment

Abstract: Deforestation is a major threat to biodiversity, particularly within tropical forest habitats. Some of the fastest diminishing tropical forest habitats in the world occur in Indonesia, where fragmentation is severely impacting biodiversity, including on the island of Java, which holds many endemic species. Extreme fragmentation on the western part of the island, especially due to small-scale agriculture, impacts animal movement and increases mortality risk for mainly arboreal taxa. To mitigate this risk in an … Show more

“…Pollination also helps in the maintenance of crop genetic variability by reducing inbreeding depression and improving resistance to environmental change (Garibaldi et al, 2011). It thus appears that the study area is capable of resilience, which is promising for conservation as this agroforestry environment hosts key animal species, such as the Javan slow loris Nycticebus javanicus, Javan palm civet Paradoxurus javanicus, Javan ferret badger Melogale orientalis, greater short-nosed fruit bat Cynopterus sphinx, and Javan kingfisher Halcyon cyanoventris, and several species of threatened songbirds (Nekaris et al, 2020).…”

“…The agroforestry matrix in the study area supports a high diversity of pollinators and hosts several other key species, such as several threatened species of songbird [54,55]. In addition, local communities banned hunting practices in the area in 2020, although hunting was common in the past, particularly for the pet trade [27,56].…”

“…While protected areas on Java are small and scattered [ 30 ], wildlife related exploitation for wildlife trade has a profound negative effect on avian [ 33 , 34 ] and mammal [ 35 ] conservation. Agroforestry systems using shade grown coffee can serve an important role in the future of biodiversity conservation on Java [ 13 , 26 , 33 , 36 , 37 , 38 ].…”
