Rapid developments in building information modelling (BIM) are escalating the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry towards digital transformation. However, the lack of skilled BIM professionals is a critical issue slowing this transformation. Currently, few educational institutions include BIM topics in their curricula, especially those developed for quantity surveying (QS) programs. Moreover, the learning outcomes of BIM curricula may not meet the current industrial requirements. Thus, this study investigated the current states, gaps, and challenges of BIM education for QS practices in Hong Kong. This study conducted surveys to determine industrial requirements and a case study to examine the BIM curricula currently offered at Hong Kong educational institutions. The results suggest that the current BIM education for QS practices is in line with the pace of BIM development in the AEC industry. However, some advanced topics are not covered in BIM education. Additionally, the non-standardized BIM competencies to be attained by students lead to uncertainty and challenges in BIM education for quantity surveyors.

Defining a BIM-Enabled Learning Environment—An Adaptive Structuration Theory Perspective

Digitalization of the AEC-FM industry has resulted in the reassessment of knowledge, knowledge management, teaching and learning, workflows and networks, roles, and relevance. Consequently, new approaches to teaching and learning to meet the demands of new jobs and abilities, new channels of communication, and a new awareness are required. Building Information Modelling (BIM) offers opportunities to address some of the current challenges through BIM-enabled education and training. This research defines the requisite characteristics of a BIM-enabled Learning Environment (BLE)—a web-based platform that facilitates BIM-enabled education and training—in order to develop a prototype version of the BLE. Using a mixed-methods research design and an Adaptive Structuration Theory (AST) perspective for interpreting the findings, 33 features and 5 distinct intentions behind those features were identified. These findings are valuable in taking forward the development of the BLE as they suggest a BLE requires the integration of functions from three existing types of information technology application (virtual learning environments, virtual collaboration platforms, and BIM applications). This study will inform the design of a web-based BLE for enhanced AEC-FM education and training, and it also provides a starting point for researchers to apply AST to evaluate the use of a BLE in different educational and training contexts.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) enables the Civil engineers professional to accomplish the digital requiremnts and also the integration and collaboration on the elaboration of projects and maintenance of buildings. BIM methodology is currently the main subject of investigation and application in the construction industry and the education have been exploring the introduction of this issue in curricular programs. The students of civil engineering and architecture, as future professionals, must updated their skills with the most recent innovative technology and knowledge. Several academies better classified within the architecture and engineer sector, were selected and its curricular programs were analyzed: the didactic strategies of inserting BIM teachings are similar in the main concept and practice, but depending of the expertize of the school, the aspects related to architecture, structures, construction or planning are deeper taught; the level cycles of introduction BIM (bachelor, master or postgraduate), the professional courses offered to architects and engineeres and the main subjects were discussed. The principal aim of the curricular research is the characterization of BIM education in distinct academies. A resume of actions and organization of topics that promotes an adequate updating of the students skills was achived, helping BIM educators in their activity.
