Abstract.A study focusing on the three factors of product lifecycle management (PLM) is being presented. The selected factors are maturity of adoption, systems' architectures and product lifecycle (PLC) related businesses. The research material comes from six globally operating companies. The applied data collection method is the synthesis of interviews, benchmarking, and peerreviewing the case companies. The material is analyzed with the application of comparative case study method. Modern PLM systems manage the data of fixed product items and the configuration knowledge of product families. Thus, companies with the most mature PLM approach are able to enhance the product configuration oriented business processes with legacy PLM architectures. Most of the studied companies are transforming their to single source architecture. This may be a challenge for some of the businesses. Another challenge is the increasing share of service related PLC businesses, which is also supported by the most mature PLM approaches. IntroductionProduct lifecycle management (PLM) was being studied through the analysis of six industrial cases. The focused factors of PLM were the maturity of PLM, business types and PLM systems' architectures. Motivation was to find out the potential combinations of factors in the above. The research questions of the paper are: what kind of business processes are the main customers of PLM, how mature is the PLM approach and what kind of changes are taking place in PLM architectures of case companies? The paper continues with literature review, which substantiates the research approach and outlines the details of the factors, which serve as a means of analysis. The research method is outlined and results presented. This paper builds on previous work in the area of design representation to identify the types of modeling information required to support the accurate prediction of engineering change propagation during the design of complex engineering systems. It uses the Function-Behavior-Structure (FBS) framework as a basis to examine how engineering changes can occur and how they may subsequently propagate. It was revealed that the relationship between change requirements and product components, the functional dependencies between product components, the behavioral dependencies between product components, and the structural dependencies between product components are all essential modeling information that need to be considered to fully describe the propagation of engineering changes. The essential modeling information identified can serve as modeling requirements to support the development of change prediction methods. In this work, three example design methods were discussed to examine the feasibility of using the modeling requirements for method evaluation. It was concluded that the level of accuracy achievable depends on the design context and hence a direct comparison between methods developed for different design contexts may not be meaningful. Abstract. Companies collaborating to develop new products need to implement an effective management of their design processes (DPs). Unfortunately, PLM systems dedicated to support design activities are not efficient as it might be expected. DPs are changing, emergent and non deterministic whereas PLM systems based on workflow technology don't support process flexibility. So, needs in terms of flexibility are necessary to facilitate the coupling with the environment reality. Furthermore, service oriented approaches (SOA) ensure a certain flexibility and adaptability of composed solutions. Systems based on SOA have the ability to inherently being evolvable. This paper proposes an SOA based approach to deal with DP flexibility in PLM systems. To achieve this flexibility, the proposed approach contains three stages. In this paper we focus on the first stage "identification".
