“…It is hoped that this can facilitate discussion with patients and families and enhance a collaborative approach (O'Neill, 2010 ), between clinician, patient and family when discussing the process of continuing to and eventual cessation of driving. The use of the pathway as part of a driving pack will also serve to normalise the process of dealing with driving in the clinical setting, as an on-going aspect of management of the disease (Adler et al ., 2000a , 2000b ), and aid in addressing the issue of viable alternatives (Taylor and Tripodes, 2001 ; Arai et al ., 2011 ).…”

“…Crucially, patients and their families may often find that there is little available in the way of viable alternatives (e.g. Taylor and Tripodes, 2001 ; Arai et al ., 2011 ).…”

“…The field of transport and mobility has seen a deluge of articles on older people and mobility in the last ten years, which span disciplines in transport and transport geography (Delbosc, 2012;Musselwhite and Haddad, 2008;Schwanen and Páez, 2010;Titheridge et al, 2009); gerontology (Arai et al, 2011;Davey, 2007;Gagliardi et al, 2007Gagliardi et al, , 2010Heikkinen, 2004;Hjorthol et al, 2010;Kaiser, 2009); urban studies (Burnett and Lucas, 2010;Lord et al, 2011); geography (Scott et al, 2009); architecture (Kim, 2011); health studies (Rosso et al, 2011;Satariano et al, 2012;Yen and Anderson, 2012); and psychology (Gagliardi et al, 2007;Oxley et al, 2010). Much of the literature, especially in transport, health studies and psychology, centres on older people's car use (Hakamies-Blomqvist, 2004;Harrison and Ragland, 2003;Hjorthol et al, 2010;Lyman et al, 2001;Oxley et al, 2010;Rosenbloom 2001Rosenbloom , 2009Rosenbloom , 2010Rosenbloom and Herbel, 2009), with debates on the relative safety and riskiness of older drivers.…”

“…Although the use of concepts such as 'accessibility' imply a focus on people's travel needs, the research methods used are often quantitative with more complex mobility practices, meanings and aspirations excluded due to an inability to quantify them (Alsnih and Hensher, 2003;Titheridge et al, 2009). Many studies emphasize the wellbeing aspects of older people's mobility (Arai et al, 2011;Delbosc, 2012;Gagliardi et al, 2010;Gilhooly et al, 2003;HakamiesBlomqvist, 2004;Kim, 2011;Hjorthol et al, 2010;Haddad, 2008, 2010;Rosso et al, 2011;Nordbakke and Schwanen, 2014;Schwanen and Páez, 2010;Ziegler and Schwanen, 2011), with mobility associated with maintaining social networks and providing access to paces that are directly (for example health centres) or indirectly (for example green spaces) therapeutic. The majority of these studies are premised on the increasing automobility of older people, which is both gendered (Davey, 2007;Hjorthol et al, 2010 andHakamies-Blomqvist andSiren, 2003), and differentiated by income and education; and this impacts on access to car (Lord et al, 2011).…”

“…The estimated life expectancy is now 83 years, and in 2030 1 of 4 persons will be over 65 (Roser 2019). Older adults are healthier today and engage in travel, social, and health-promoting activities (Schm€ ocker et al 2008;Clarke et al 2009;Cole et al 2010;Arai et al 2011). They travel often in cars and are accustomed to deciding when, where, and how to travel.…”
