Implementation of Heat Maps in Geographical Information System – Exploratory Study on Traffic Accident Data

Abstract: In this study, the authors created an overview of the usage of heat maps as a GIS visualization method. In the first part of the paper, a significant number of studies was evaluated, and the technique was thoroughly described to set up a base level for further research. At this moment, the most used input data for heat maps are point data. While these data fit the method very well, also studies based on line and polygon data were found. The second part of the paper is devoted to an exploratory study on traffic… Show more

“…We calculated the density based on the check-ins by all users, providing us with more accurate results for further analysis, as shown in Figure 7. Red represents the highest density and white represents the average, which eventually dissolves into the base color of the map according to the type of data [67]. Check-ins that did not satisfy the minimum criteria in our dataset were not considered; thus, such data does not appear on the map.…”

“…The QGIS version 2.18.15 (QGIS Developer team, Las Palmas (2016)) was used to plot the drug-resistant TB patients, and a map of geospatial distribution was constructed. The heat maps depicting spatial heterogeneity [19] were constructed for the year 2015 to 2018. The quadratic weight was used as a density measure [20], and the heat maps [5,20] were constructed with a buffer radius appropriate to the layer units [21].…”

“…Heatmaps are already used for geographical information systems visualizations. 17 The use of heatmapping is now expanding also within the healthcare field, and the most common uses are to gain information on epidemiological or healthcare utilization patterns and inform public health decisions, 12,13 or to visualize large datasets. 14,15 In cancer research, heatmaps are used to identify mitochondrial RNA switching to discover novel tumor biomarkers 18 and to predict patient survival.…”
