Implant rehabilitation in patients with oral lichen planus: an overview

Abstract: OLP is not an absolute contraindication for implant insertion and there is no increased risk of failure. Implants should be positioned only if mucosal signs and symptoms are in the remission phase. A careful oral hygiene and frequent follow-up are the main recommendations in OLP patients rehabilitated with implants.

“…The basal cells (Target cells) undergo apoptosis due to the action of CD8 cytotoxic T cells . Since cytokines are involved in the pathogenesis of OLP and play a major role in bone resorption, this may lead to bone loss at the implant site, eventually leading to implant failure (Figs ). The current study patient selection was according to the correlation of the histopathological and clinical picture.…”

“…LP patients treated with dental implants are at a risk of implant failure due to inability of the epithelium to attach to the implant surface, which allows the bacteria to access the preimplant tissue, leading to failure of osseointegration . It has also been recommended that lichen planus patients be handled with care during the remission phase …”
