Immunosensors are devices that comprise both a biomolecular recognition system, such as an antibody and its corresponding antigen, and a transducer to translate the high affinity and specific binding event into a physical signal.Antibodies are produced by an immunological response to the presence of a foreign substance called an antigen. Antibodies may be immobilised onto a variety of platforms including bulk planar surfaces and nanoparticles by either covalent or adsorption strategies. Different interfaces between the bio-components and the detector are available to monitor in 'real-time' the signal generated by biological interactions. The transducers detect, for example, the change in electron transfer, absorbance, fluorescence, refractive index, mass change or heat transfer as the antibody binds to the antigen of interest. Such analytical devices have allowed a wide range of analytes to be identified and quantified such as pathogens, toxins, environmental food contaminants and disease biomarkers.The demand for sensitive, rapid, 'on-site' techniques has taken advantage of the latest advances in microfluidics and nanotechnology. This chapter will highlight current trends in immobilisation, micro/nano-fluidics/ and transducers utilised. A number of examples outlining the exploitation of these elements in immunosensors and their successful applications will be described.

A six sensor electrode system was developed to distinguish three tea extract samples by using impedance measurement technology. Five of the six sensing electrodes were made of different wt% single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) and electropolymerizedpyrrole over the surface of gold electrodes. The sixth electrode was made by electropolymerizedpyrrole doped with Poly (sodium-4-styrenesulfonate). The sensing electrodes were characterized by FT-IR, Cyclic Voltammetry, and Transmission Electron Microscope. Various concentrations of six tea leaf extracts (3 types) were made and scanned at different frequencies and the best frequency of 100 kHz was chosen. Principal component analysis (PCA) was performed on the signals to show that the signals vary to distinguish each of the tea samples and lead to subsequent classification.

Abstract:The electrooxidative behavior and determination of ciprofloxacin at a glassy carbon electrode were investigated using cyclic, linear sweep, differential pulse and square wave voltammetric techniques. The dependence of the peak current and peak potentials on pH, concentration, nature of buffer, and scan rate were examined. The oxidation of ciprofloxacin gave a single and irreversible peak at glassy carbon electrode. The process was diffusion controlled. A linear response was obtained between 1.0 10 -6 and 4.0 10 -5 M in 0.1 M sulphuric acid for both techniques. The recovery studies were also achieved to check selectivity and accuracy of the methods. The proposed methods were applied for the determination of ciprofloxacin from pharmaceutical dosage forms without any time-consuming extraction, separation, adsorption steps. The repeatability, reproducibility, precision and accuracy of the proposed methods were investigated.
