Impedance of coils over layered metals with continuously variable conductivity and permeability: Theory and experiment

Abstract: The frequency-dependent impedance of right-cylindrical air-core eddy-current probes over thick metal plates whose conductivity and permeability vary as a function of depth in the near-surface region have been studied both experimentally and theoretically. Measurements of probe impedance were made from 1 kHz to 1 MHz using an impedance analyzer. Precision-wound air-core coils were used for testing the theory, and commercial eddy-current probes were used to connect with industrial practice. The samples were of t… Show more

“…The results of blindly using the nearest available instrument have often been disappointing. Recent work has begun to offer a theoretical underpinning to experimental measurements [3][4], and our work continues this line of inquiry. Modeling must be performed before equipment is purchased, or expensive experiments undertaken.…”

“…It is an ideal example, therefore, for illustrating the basic nature of eddy current phenomena to non-experts. Furthermore, the model has been proven useful in practical applications of layer-sizing and corrosion detection algorithms via the swept-frequency method [5,6]. It was this modelthat was first incorporated into the simulator.…”

“…Such non-linear material profiles might be produced, as an example, by coating a substrate, by case hardening, heat treatment, ion bombardment, or by chemical processing. A recently developed alternative method used hyperbolic tangential profiles to represent near surface changes in conductivity (Uzal et al, 1993). The method proposed by Cheng was adopted here due to it being more flexible.…”
