Impairment, disability, and life satisfaction in Parkinson's disease

Abstract: Motor and musculoskeletal impairments are correlated with disability scores. Bradykinesia and musculoskeletal impairments are correlated with life satisfication. Patients with Parkinson's disease might benefit from a rehabilitation programme focusing on motor impairments such as bradykinesia as well as musculoskeletal impairments even in the early stages of the disease.

“…5 People with PD typically present with multiple motor and nonmotor impairments. 6 To date, the investigation of impairments contributing to self-reported activities of daily living 7,8 show associations between impairments and reduced activity but do not address the impact of impairments on performance of specific balance and mobility tasks. A small number of studies have addressed the contribution of individual motor impairments to specific mobility tasks.…”

“…The pelvis rotation was higher in patient group, which agrees with a previous study 23 . The trunk mobility loss, in a flexed posture (sagital plane) happens with IPD progression 29 . In a recent research 23 , seven patients were assessed in an early stage of IPD and seven healthy individuals, the trunk forward flexion range was 2.1º for PG, and 1.8º for CG, demonstrating that PG has a stooped posture, trunk forward flexion higher that CG.…”

“…This can be explained by the fact that, in order to play these games, it is necessary to go to gambling sites. Hence, the physical limitations caused by PD (Dural et al, 2003) may explain why fewer participants in this study played bingo and slot machines. Nevertheless, the results show that slot machines are the game at which the greatest amount of money was spent by the two gamblers who revealed having developed PG in the past.…”

“…By the time the disease is diagnosed, there is, among other things, a lack of dopamine in the striatum, which is caused by the degeneration of neurons that produce this molecule in the substantia nigra pars compacta (Jellinger, 2012, for a review). The neurochemical dysfunctions and pathological anomalies in PD cause motor symptoms such as tremors, bradykinesia, and postural instability, which hinder the accomplishment of daily and domestic life activities (Dural, Atay, Akbostanci, & Kucukdeveci, 2003). Psychological and behavioural symptoms are also reported.…”
