Impacts of selective logging on the oxidative status of tropical understorey birds

Abstract: 1. Selective logging is the dominant form of human disturbance in tropical forests, driving changes in the abundance of vertebrate and invertebrate populations relative to undisturbed old-growth forests. 2. A key unresolved question is understanding which physiological mechanisms underlie different responses of species and functional groups to selective logging. Regulation of oxidative status is thought to be one major physiological mechanism underlying the capability of species to cope with environmental chan… Show more

“…red GSH/ t GSH) in red blood cells were similar to values reported in other bird species (i.e. 55-70%, Romero-Haro and Alonso-Alvarez 2014, Messina et al 2020) and differed between adults and nestlings (Student's t-test, t 126 = −5.2, p < 0.0001), with red GSH constituting 56.7% of t GSH levels in adults and 63.9% of t GSH levels in nestlings.…”

“…protein turnover and pheomelanogenesis). The t GSH pool is composed of more than 90% of red GSH in healthy mammalian cells (Pastore et al 2003), whereas the proportion of red GSH is about 55-70% in bird red blood cells (Romero-Haro and Alonso-Alvarez 2014, Messina et al 2020). Although GSH synthesis requires the action of two distinct enzymes, i.e.…”
