Impacts of Present and Future Climate Change and Climate Variability on Agriculture in the Temperate Regions: North America

Abstract: The potential impact of climate variability and climate change on agricultural production in the United States and Canada varies generally by latitude. Largest reductions are projected in southern crop areas due to increased temperatures and reduced water availability. A longer growing season and projected increases in CO 2 may enhance crop yields in northern growing areas. Major factors in these scenarios analyzes are increased drought tendencies and more extreme weather events, both of which are detrimental … Show more

“…The models also agree that much of the Southeast and West will experience reductions in precipitation and increases in drought severity and duration. These changes will have dramatic effects on agricultural production (Motha and Baier 2005).…”

“…Climate change poses a major threat not only to agricultural productivity but also to the capacity of agricultural systems to provide diverse ES 15,16 . In recent decades, an emphasis of agronomic research has been the development of technologies for maintaining crop yields under future climates, for example, by increasing external inputs, crop breeding or genetic engineering [17][18][19] . However, these approaches often do not consider the importance of concomitantly sustaining the diverse ES of agricultural landscapes 20 .…”

“…In addition, the changes of land use, such as urban expansion, deforestation and declining area of water bodies, will also influence the intensity and distribution of UHI [14]. Besides, Motha and Baier [15] pointed out that warming trend caused by the urbanization was even more than the change of regional climate background. All of the above views can indicate that urbanization has the great impact on urban climate.…”
