Impacts of different methylprednisolone administration routes in patients with sudden hearing loss or Meniere’s disease

Abstract: Background Evidence suggests that glucocorticoids are important in the treatment of sudden hearing loss (SHL) and Meniere’s disease (MD). However, different glucocorticoid administration methods may have a significant impact on treatment outcomes. Objective This study aimed to investigate effects of different glucocorticoid administration methods on sudden hearing loss and Meniere’s disease. Methods In this study, glucocorticoids were adminis… Show more

“…Upon the boy’s third admission, we administered corticosteroids postauricularly and systemically due to his profound hearing loss which was then improved obviously. It is reported that systemic alone or postauricular administration of glucocorticoids seem to be equally effective, and the specific effects and mechanisms require further study ( 24 ). Since the first report of pediatric MD in 1940, there have been relatively few cases reported in the literature.…”

“…Compared with tympanic injection, retroauricular injection has a better curative effect in the treatment of sudden deafness, Meniere's disease, and other diseases. It also has fewer adverse reactions and is easier to conduct, patients in the oral steroid hormone group had a higher post-treatment heart rate than the post-auricular steroid hormone injection group during administration, and a higher percentage of patients on oral steroids had sleep disturbances than those on post-auricular steroid hormone injections [ 28 ]. It is a new treatment method aiming to replace the tympanic injection.…”

“…Moreover, relatively high concentrations of drug residues in various organs may easily trigger adverse reactions such as disorder in drug metabolism, gastrointestinal irritation, disorder in water and mineral metabolism, and infections. In particular, uncontrollable increases in blood sugar level are extremely likely to occur in diabetic patients during the treatment process, a situation which may result in ketoacidosis [12].…”
